KIA dogtag (with research)

Some time ago I bought this little set of a Wehrpass and the top half of an Erkennungsmarke.
This dogtag belonged to Wilhelm Wieser.
He was born on December 12 1914 in Karlsruhe, he worked as a joiner.
On April 12 1937 he was drafted in to the army, he joined the basic trainings unit of the 13th Infantry Regiment, after two months of basic training he was demobilized again.
During the big mobilization of August 1939 he is called back in to service, on August 29 1939 he joins the basic training unit of IR111, it was in this period that he was issued with this dogtag.
On December 20 1939 he is promoted to Oberschützen and on February 21 1940 he is transfered to an actif unit: the 3th company of IR111, this was a regiment that belonged to the 35 Infantry Division.
This division participates in the Westfeldzug, they invade Belgium on May 10 1940.
On the afternoon of May 21 1940 his company tries to cross the Schelde river in the little village of Hollain.
It was during this assult that Wilhelm Wieser was KIA, he was one of the many German casualties that day.
Afterwards the Germans buried +/- 78 German soldiers in Hollain.
The Schelde river in Hollain was defended by the BEF (British Expeditionary Force), the fighting in this sector was very fierce, two VC's were awarded for the defence of the Schelde river sector in May 1940.
Apparantly his company commander did not only sent the WP to his family but also the upper part of his dogtag.

This is a thread in which you can see some pictures that were taken on May 22 1940 during a similar assult on the Schelde river sector that was defended by the BEF:

In June 1940 a soldier of the 225ID traveled through Hollain, he took three pictures of the cemetery there, it was here that Wilhelm Wieser was also buried.

After the war the German soldiers that were KIA during WW2 were reburied on the German wargraves cemetery in Lommel.
This is his grave in the fall of 2008.

Peter, that's good stuff! That picture set of the river crossing operations is really outstanding as well, and with this connection. Pic stickied.

Peter
I believe that this may have been my Mothers, brother.

"Dec 12, 1914, Wilhem, Married Ida (Ida died 1983) He died in Belgium and burried in a soldiers grave yard, had twins Renete and Christa"

I do know that there were the following family members:
May 8, 1906 Gertrude, Married became Bohner
Luciel, Died at 5 years of age, Blond hair, blue eyes
Nov 11, 1911 Albert Walter Married to Lina, no children known, Died May 20, 1987
Dec 12, 1914 Whilhem, Married Ida (Ida died 1983) He died in Belgium and burried in a soldiers grave yard, had twins Renete and Christa
Aug 1923 Irena, married Ludwig Moser ( he died in 1958)
Oct 8, 1927 Clara, Married Arno Hass, Moved to Canada Died July 12, 1993
March 25, 1929 Margot, Married abd became a Burgraff In Karlshrue, with two children Peter and Joseph, Joseph is married.
Helmut, Died at 12 years of age, from falling of the roof.
Nov 2, 1924/25 Erich,Last hear from in 1944 in Yokuaslovia.

I can not find any other links to my mothers family, but the name and date match for Wilhem or (Whilhem) is to exact to be any other than the brother that was listed by Clara, my mother.

I think that I have just found a long lost realitive.

I am Gary Hass, of Canada. I am son of Clara Hass, nee Wieser, of Karlsrue Germany. She listed her family as this:

May 8, 1906 Gertrude, Married became Bohner
Luciel, Died at 5 years of age, Blond hair, blue eyes
Nov 11, 1911 Albert Walter Married to Lina, no children known, Died May 20, 1987
Dec 12, 1914 Wilhem, Married Ida (Ida died 1983) He died in Belgium and burried in a soldiers grave yard, had twins Renete and Christa
Aug 1923 Irena, married Ludwig Moser ( he died in 1958)
Oct 8, 1927 Clara, Married Arno Hass, Moved to Canada Died July 12, 1993
March 25, 1929 Margot, Married and became a Burgraff In Karlshrue, with two children Peter and Joseph, Joseph is married.
Helmut, Died at 12 years of age, from falling of the roof.
Nov 2, 1924/25 Erich,Last hear from in 1944 in Yokuaslovia.

It appears that this is one of the family members. When Clara, came to Canada, there was no further contact with family.
I have been searching for a connection and found this.
This is fantastic. Do you have any other ideas where I can find Wieser Information.

Wow, what a coincidence. The internet makes the world much smaller indeed.

Hello Gary,

What one can find with a google search!

This Wehrpaß isn't in my collection anymore, but I will forward this information to the owner.
I'am afraid I can't help you any further I am not a specialist in genealogy.
If you are in Germany you perhaps can visit his grave, the German war cemetery in Lommel (Belgium) where he is buried isn't that far from the German border, it is located on the street between Lommel and Leopoldsburg.
The cemetery where he initially was buried in Hollain is now a British war graves cemetery.

Regards,
Peter

Thank you

I was hoping to find any link to the items, and or family members. I am going to search, because I think I have his military death card. If so, I will post a picture of it to this thread. MY search has been re energized.
