Removing shine from dirty/oily stock?

I have a G41 ac43 with a nice unsanded stock but for whatever reason it has accumulated quite a lot of dirt and oil over the years and has developed somewhat of a glossy or shiny surface. Is there a safe way to clean it up a bit or should I just leave it as is? I had considered a light wipe down with a rag and a little denatured alcohol but I didn't want to take any unnecessary risks.

Some of the varnishes/stains used during the war can have a shine to them. Best to leave it alone.

A flaxseed based oil or varnish will look like that over time. That's probably original and shouldn't be removed, as previously stated.
