Not a K98b but a reworked Gew98 with the flat sight. We call these 98M.

Any markings on the grip area? Maybe a KG69?

hallo , i find K167 on the grip area and other 2 on the under the rear sight KI167 or K167i thinks . what is this marks ? see you later luca

What you have there is what is known as a "transitional" K98 - it is a GEW 98 (WW1 issue) that was reworked between the wars and the newer flat rear sight was installed. Generally they were rebarrelled with a new barrel with the newer sight incl on it. Nice piece where the bolt matches the rest of the rifle. These were used in WW2 just like standard K98's. Many collectors (incl me) like these variations of K98's. Many were issued to the SS, as they were not considered "worthy" of regulation equipment - early on - meaning in the early to mid 1930's. I have a SS marked Transitional in my collection.
I would take your rifle apart and make sure the barrel is not marked with SS markings. Also look on the end of the rear sight - the end that does not have the push button - that is where my rifle is SS marked - in very small markings.
Thanks for posting yours.

Welcome Luca, you actually have a pretty nice rifle from the looks of it, - looks all original and period matching, not too easy to find an upgraded Gewehr98 original matching these days.

The rifle is probably just an Army (Reichsheer) rifle, it looks like it went through an Army depot, probably late, during the nazi era considering the BSW barrel with e/4 waffenamts, - this would date it well within the nazi era, the e/6 and e/4 have a transition period, but e/4 generally means late 1930's (1936 or later).

I suspect it is a late 1930's upgrade and re-barrel, the fact that it looks largely original parts, only a re-barrel and upgraded rearsight suggest late to me, earlier rifles are often full of re-matched parts, - some complete refurbished rifles. Though to really give an opinion of this rifle, or any rifle, the stock markings are most important.

Try and do pictures of any markings on the stock, all areas that have a clear markings if you can, - typically the wrist, the small of the stock where you grip the rifle shooting it, is where the most important markings are, but the takedown washer, the right side of the stock and lower buttstock are all areas to observe markings.

The stock is right for a MO/15, here is a stock from a MO/15 i use to own, near identical wrist and under the cypher, not sure why they re-serialed over the matching original serial but you see re-stamping over old serial's sometimes, though it is strange that it was done on the stock and TG/FP when it looks like they were original to the rifle (by acceptance the stock and TG group are right for MO/15). But i am pretty sure most of the parts are original to manufacture, though of course re-barreled and the take down in the stock was added when it was upgraded.

I think the bolt is probably period, but probably not MO/15 original, the sleeve and fonts are not quite there for known rifles. Still it looks good, probably period, you just never know 100% these days, - factory original is easier to be sure about, but these days too many character-challenged people know enough to hump just about any rifle enough to pass as a depot rework. being in Italy probably helps, I doubt many humpers are working there on old German rifles...

Too bad there is not clear ordnance depot marking, I am sure it isn't SS work, but it certainly can't hurt to see under the stock, never know what you might find.

ciao luca

Not sure of your meaning (your post is difficult to understand clearly), but I think the rifle is fine, the re-stamping of the serial over the trigger guard and stock is not a problem as i see it, - I do not know why they did it, the underlying serials were not faint enough to justify a re-strike, but maybe the armorer thought differently, - it is common to re-serail replaced parts at depots, it is also common to sand the original stock and re-serial, this has neither condition but I think it was period done.

I like the rifle, I am just offering an opinion as to what parts are original compared to known acceptance patterns.

Hi,

my english is not 'the best, I enjoyed very much your opinions, and' I was looking for this also because 'the need for this forum, then I also snubbed these rifles but I have re-evaluated thanks to you .. !!

I hope that the future will new conversations, thanks again for everything.:hail:
