Cousin Tokarev SVT 40

Can anybody post some pics of a correct. SVT 38 and 40 ? I know many have been modified with different muzzle flash hiders, and have been reworked.

Let's see what we can come up with.

I can. I had the most beautiful matching SVT.38 I have seen that I sold off awhile back. Completely original except for mm mag (not unusual). I currently have an exceptional original matching Tula 1941 SVT.40 as well. When you see originals they are clearly identifiable from reworks....clearly. First, the parts are stamped, not electro pencilled. Second, the bolts are in the white, not plumb or refinished. Third, the stocks are profusely marked with inspection stamps, date, arsenal, serial number, no lineouts, etc., and they have a very fragile varnish on them. I'll post pics of the SVT.38 tonight.

Also, as far as information on the net goes, this is as good as it gets, and is quite good: http://mosinnagant.net/USSR/SVTsection.asp

This is a PIC of what I think is about as original of an SVT40 that I have seen. No one can seem to agree on finish, but I feel the flakey red shellac is correct. The one in the PIC has what looks to be a matching SVT38 magazine. Tulas have bolt carriers numbered on the bottom originally, Izhevsks, and I'm pretty sure Kovrovs as well, are numbered on top.

My 1941 Kovrov has bolt handle #d on top. Matching except mag, unfortunately stock was sanded leaving serial number barely readable. The serial number starts with what looks like a 3, but the 3 in the number is flat topped. JL

Great pics Ham and Draz

Thanks for the post. Were the mags numbered on the 38's and 40's ? How does that cleaning rod thing work ?

Yes, the mags were numbered. I believe there were 3 issued and they had the serial number and 1, 2, 3. The rod on the SVT.38 has a section that swivels out and forms a T if I remember correctly.

Haak, yes, I did sell it to fund other things. I sold it a bit cheaper than I would have to Scott B as a favor. He turned around and used it as trade bait or sold it. A nice matching Svt.38 like this in original shape is much rarer than any German semi-auto. I'd say I've seen probably 10 G.41Ms for every nice matching Svt.38 in original shape. I paid $700 for this rifle in 1995 or so. It needed to be in a specialist SVT collection. I have an exceptionally nice matching original SVT.40 Tula 1941 still that I am keeping as my representative SVT.

Stv 40

Thats the way all the STV 40s looked pre-85. I think they were just early imports and not vet bringbacks. In the back of my safe I have a mostly matching 40. I never owned a 38, always heard they were more fragile than a 40. I always liked to shoot my guns. But I do remember seeing a photo in one of my books. It showed the front of a landing craft returning from Normandy Beach with some rifles leaning up front. One of them was a STV40. So a few could be bring backs. I know I've seen lots of photos of mostly SS troops with them. I think I read somewhere that some of the defenders at Normandy were Russian Troops also.

Svt40 1940 ishevsk

Hello
please find pictures of a full matching (excepted magazine) number SVT40 made by ISHEVSK plan in 1940.
Original blueing. Deactivated weapon.

Found in the area of Vosges (north east of France) in 1945, probably on a german soldier (as you know , the russians did not reach the french border).
Original sight mounting rail on the sides of the receiver but no notch on the top. So it is not a true sniper rifle.

Original Tokarev scope (N° 04469) and mount and lens cap.

Original bayonet made by ISHEVESK as well but not matching to the rifle.

regards

Canada is currently flooded with SVT40 arsenal refurbs. I will have to get some pics of a representable one. Four years ago when the rifles first appeared on the market they were selling for almost $650. Now you can purchase them for $550 (including 800 surplus rounds of ammo).

There are many variations available (various factories, wood vs laminate stock, naval vs army stock and the two variations of muzzle ports, etc.).

Some are all matching and some are force matched. When I get home from Christmas I will try to get some pics. Again, most are not "original" as they have been re-finished.

svt40

Hi argentecq

I can tell you that the one I put on the forum is an original , not an arsenal refurb svt40 or re-finished or whatever.
It is a true original, genuine example. What we call in France : "jus, de terrain", that means in English "found on the ground".
regards

Xavier

No doubts in my opinion that yours is original. It has the proper patina etc.
