of all these event sheilds this one appears most frequently. These also show up on the
Wehrmansgewer long rifle as well. These were applied to these rifles I feels as examples used in sporting competion as "event examples" So all competing had the same rifle.
Another example is the juli 44 Innsbruck Austria meet. These are usually seen with a paper lable with event info and date. "see photo"

Hi, I had one of the Mauser target rifles with the metal shield but I can't find my notes on it. Sold it at the SOS two years ago. I don't know the purpose of those shields, whether they were for "event examples", souvenirs for participants or indication of awards. I don't know anything about that event.
But the paper tags are found with different years and on different models of rifles. They were issued by the Standschutzen Verband Tirol-Vorarlberg. According to the contest rules of the shooting events sponsored by this organization, every participants' weapon had to be tested and approved for sights and trigger pull. It is only logical that some simple method be used to indicate testing and approval. A paper tag on the stock was simple indication that your rifle passed muster. No concrete evidence, but multiple appearances on different rifles from different years of a cheap means of indenification seems the logical explanation.
My example is found on a Gustloff KKW with police acceptance stamp.

Bill, I don't know if you ever sought to identify the Deutsches Bundesschiessen Leipzig, but I did and found this brief explanation on another forum thread.
Bundesschiessen refers to the 23 national matches held by the German Shooting Federation (Deutsche Schutzenbund or DSB) between 1884 and 1934. The 20th match took place in Leipzig from July 6 to July 15 of 1934, and consisted of 1800 shooters from three countries, competing on 175 lanes. The DSB was apparently disbanded in 1938.

Thanks, though I may be the one wearing brown shoes here at the Mauser affair. I have primarily Walther products.

I cant blame you one bit. I have 3 walthers and they are my favorites.
Walther rifles are in a class of their own. Some day I will post them.
