Pre-War Polish WZ98AZ .22 Trainer

pzjgr

EOD - bombs and bullets
Here is what I think is a pretty rare-bird...I figure I would post it here, since German used captured weapons, and its just really cool.

Its a .22 trainer based on the WZ98AZ Karbine, which of course is a copy of the small ring Kar98A...It appears this is a purpose built trainer, not a sleeve job, or a conversion kit. Barrel is a .22 barrel, must have been fitted on the rifle during conversion (we have not taken it completely apart, so I don't know what if any barrel marks there are). Appears to be single shot, as there is no magazine components. Bolt body appears to be purpose made for the trainer, bolt sleeve and safety appear to be re-numbered to match gun.

All other numbers on the gun match. Nice stamping on right stock side.....

I cannot find any info or pics of this variant except a few brief mentions here and there. It is not in Ball's book either....

Anyway, here are the pics...

polish trainer

This rifle is a 98az converted to 22kal. There are two versions of polish trainers. This one and the purpose built wz31. I'd say these rebuilds pre-date the wz31's. Or could of been made in addition to. The wz31 has it's own bolt design and a bottom sliding extractor. Where this rifle has a modified mauser bolt. These are scarce and it looks like its in great condition..Congrats!!! Complete model of the wz31 is the KBK.S.WZ.31

I found this example browsing online. To compare the features. It did'nt show the sliding extractor though. It's the same action used in the WZ48 moisin nagant clone. They just re-tooled for the rifle of the army of the day.

trainer

I wanted to bump this post with info added. Of note, the rifle I found has had it's bolt heated up and bent down. It should be straight..I dont want anyone thinking otherwise.
