I don't have anything to add critically, but that is the strangest mix of parts I've ever seen. The bolt and the stock match? The cleaning rod and the barreled action? That is some serious assembly work there.

I would say it is highly doubtful this is a period assembly. Any depot would have matched up the major components, typically thoroughly, but at least the stock would have signs of depot acceptance and re-serialing. Most ordnance shops would serial up the replaced parts, especially so prior to the war and during the early phases.

This looks like a simple accumulation of hard to get parts, primarily from two rifles, - which is common with the 98b as so few survived the war in original condition, especially this early. Most "nice" 98b are in the e-f blocks, which are the last two blocks made (though a strange g-block is known)

Also, this rifle has been on the forums before, I have pictures of it from 2010, but it only shows the barreled receiver, - no text - so I do not know the context of the discussion, perhaps the other parts were not photographed, but it is also possible that it was only a barreled receiver at the time. The barrel is an ordnance spare, JPS/38 make, probably installed during the war, but the rest are just really nice and valuable parts.

Imo of course, anything is possible...
