Hello guys,

This morning I visited the militaria show in Wavre and found this interesting Soldbuch.

Richard Warmbold (1912) was an electrician from Northern-Germany on January 30 1942 he was enlisted in the army with Art Ers Abt (mot) 225, a training unit of the 225 Infantry Division, after his basic training he goes to Feld Ers Btl 110 and to the eastern front near Rshew with the 8th company (MG) of IR252 (110ID).
He meets the criteria to be awarded the winter war medal and he thus gets it in August ’42.
In May ’42 he gets spotted fever and stays in hospital for this until July 21 1942.
In the fall of ’42 he is transferred to the staff of “Afrika Brigade 999”, a penal unit, on February 1 ’43 he is promoted to Gefreiter and on November 1 ’43 to Obergefreiter, so we can presume he isn’t one of the soldiers serving his sentence; in March ’43 they were in Tunisia.
After their retreat from Africa, he is assigned to the staff of “Kommando Sizilien”, a unit of the 15th Pz Gren Div.
From September 11 1943 till October 1943 he is in hospital for kidney problems.
In January 1944 he is transferred to the staff of Pz Jg Abt 559 (sfl), were he gets a job as a technical specialist.
Because of his technical function he can’t be assigned to ad hoc created units.
In April 1944 his unit gets equipped with the famous Jagdpanther and is renamed Schw Pz Jg Abt 559 (Panther).
On July 20 1944, the day of the assassination attempt on A.Hitler, he is promoted to the rank of “Handwerker” and gets the “Dienststellüngsabzeichen für Handwerker” for me that is an unknown badge.
His unit participates in some of the heaviest combat actions on the western front in September/October ’44 in Belgium and Holland (Market Garden), in December ’44 his unit is part of the Panzer Lehr Division.
In the battle of the bulge they belonged to Kampfgruppe Poschinger, a Kampfgruppe that fought in the battle for control over Bastogne.
Richard Warmbold wasn’t a crewmember of one of the Jagdpanthers but maintaining and repairing them was an important job to; Jagdpanthers sure were modern and powerful tank destroyers but they also broke down a lot and mechanics were certainly needed to keep the operational.
On May 31 1945 he is discharged from the army and on April 3 1946 he is released from POW camp.

Cheers,
Peter

Great SB Peter, and interesting read! Thanks for sharing it. I've really been enjoying these!

Because of this Soldbuch I picked up my book about the battle for Woensdrecht again and it turns out that Schw Pz Jg Abt 559 was based in the woods between Essen and Huybergen in the first weeks of October '44.
The presence of the Jagdpanthers and Sturmgeschutze of Schw Pz Jg Abt 559 in the Woensdrecht sector was a big problem for the Canadians, their tanks were no match for these tankdestroyers.
On October 14 '44 allied intelligence managed to find the exact location of the staff, repair shop included, of Schw Pz Jg Abt 559; inmediately an air raid was launched against them, Spitfires of the 2nd Tactical Airforce attacked them in full force.

Thanks for another enjoyable read, Peter. There's not any place to see a Soldbuch such as this, much less a chance to purchase one where I live. Keep 'em coming! :hail:

Hello Peter,

Thanks for these contributions, I am new to this forum but have been interested in the Woensdrecht battle for some years now. The book I have with the most detailed account is the Whitakers' "Tug of War", although it's obviously one-sided. What is the book you refer to in your post; what bibliography would you recommend for the German units (6th FsJ et c.) and their activities?

I had a rare opportunity to pass through Woensdrecht two weeks ago and stopped to get a sense of the land and take a few photos. A pity I hadn't seen this site earlier or I would have suggested meeting up!

Best regards

Ulric

Thanks Ulric,

The best book for the battle of Woensdrecht is:
Autumn Gale by Jack Didden and Mark Swarts.
https://www.amazon.com/Autumn-Schwere-Panzerjager-abteilung-Kampfgruppe-Recovery/dp/9080039381
Alas out of print.

Then their is also:
Die Löwen von Carentan by Volker Griesser, the unit history of FJR6, it also has a chapter on Woensdrecht.

Their is also a good local book but that is written in Dutch and will not be of great help for you.

Cheers,
Peter

PS: Next time you are in the neighbourhood just let me know and I'll give you a small battlefield tour, I live very close to the actual battlefields.

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the recommendations, Löwen von Carentan is now on order! I see what you mean about Autumn Gale, the second hand copies are all in the $200-300 range, which is a lot to have to fork out. Is this close to the original sale price, or has it been inflated due to scarcity?

Mijn nederlands of vlaams is heel slegs, maar ik kan een betje lesen. I wouldn't mind adding a Dutch book to my collection. :)

I will definitely let you know when I get another opportunity to visit your area!

Best wishes

Ulric

Hello Ulric,

The books in Dutch are also all out of print for a long time now.

The Autumn Gale books initially did cost around 75€ I think.
Alas they were printed in very small numbers and they will not go in to print in the near future, the $200-300 is thus a price because of scarity.
- I have sent you a pm about this book.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter,
I just happened across this soldbuch thread. Very interesting to me since I have visited the IWM, looked at the referenced armored vehicle on display there, and wondered who might have actually crewed or worked on it.
