Found this one for dirt cheap on the used rack in a local shop last month. I rarely stop by that shop and 99.9% of the time you never find anything decent in the shops out here, yet alone a late 98/40! But unexpectedly, this was a pleasant surprise. I excitedly gave it a quick check for matching serial numbers and bought it. The stock was covered in a light coat of shellac but I carefully removed it and reoiled the stock. I added a rod and a hood and this is the result. Only downfall is the 2 screw holes in the sling cutout. Id like to know more info about these...seems like info on who and where they were used is kinda splotchy. Ive heard of ties to the SS and some Heer units, buts that's about all Ive heard.

Just came across this old thread. I stumbled onto a bolt m/m jhv44 a couple months ago, it has what appears to be a Russian capture shellac on the stock (?), but otherwise excellent condition. I understand the laminated 44s are among the rarest of this model. Guess I lucked out.

These are interesting rifles, but wow, information on them is scarce. Any good sources?

Thanks jhv. I thought I'd expand my horizons beyond gunboards, this forum seems to have a lot of good folks. I appreciate the help.
