byf 45 Phosphate....Some Questions on Features

EOD - bombs and bullets
OK, I posted many pics of this over on GB, but here are some pics, and some question for you guys...

Notice the RR markings, with the stacked E/135...I have never seen them stacked, any significance, or just late war sloppiness?

The followe is stamped, E/135 marked...but whats the "S"? Also, I noticed on the left slot area, there is a "2" over "M"...anyone seenm these marks before?

As I said in the htread there, I received it with the stock cracked completely in two, in an odd fashion, like the pic in BOTW with the soldier using a 98k as a baseball bat. I repaired it, it came out nice and solid, its back in one piece. Not a completely invisible repair, but it is far better than it was.

Its a bolt mismatch too, but the bolt is matching in finish (a pleasing greenish phosphate), and late war...s/n 402 a, no WaA on the underside, only the entwined RW mark, and a firing proof on the back. Bolt is matching to itself, marked as per the book, 402 on the shroud, 02 on the FP and cocking piece, E/37 and no s/n on the safety. Very two toned, as the safety and cocking piece are blued...Oh, no guide rib, round holes.

Too bad about the issues, its a very clean rifle otherwise...

A few more....

A few oddball marks in the sling well...

The "B" inside the TG...

Oh, I didn't get a picture of it, but it has the late war type sear, squared off, and an Imperial marked trigger...

That bolt is from a later byf45 or svw45, so at least it's right for the rifle!

On the follower, I would suspect that it's an armorers part used in late production, mainly due to the fact that it's milled. Pretty common to see several small armorers parts on these late guns. As to the double 135, just late war sloppiness.

It is a shame about the stock- I watched that one a long time, even made them an offer on it once, but they refused. Still, it is a decent example to have.

Follower....I keep mis-speaking, I should say it ISN"T stamped...you are right, it is milled. My guess is the safety too is an armorer part considering the E/37 and no s/n...

I thought the price was a bit high too, a friend of mine bought it to go with a svw 45 he picked up. He fell into it on the svw, it walked into the Rochester show, duffle cut solid walnut full kriegs, missing the front chunk and the bands. Otherwise all matching and correct. He snagged it for $300!!! He made a replacement front piece from another matching piece of walnut, found un-numbered correct bands, got some proper screws and an endplate, and it turned out perfect.

He is mainly a Japanese collector, and wavered back, and decided after he bought this to stick with Japanese, he sold the svw for $1600 (nice return...but it was a great rifle, if i had the money i would've bought it), and sold me this one for what he paid. I worked some trade in there, so it really didn't cost me as much as it listed for.

When he told me about it, bolt mismatch and broken stock, I figured, ehh, way too much. But when I saw it and was able to fondle it, I decided I had to go for it, since it was so nice, and I just loved the greenish phosphate....like they say, I probably didn't pay too much, just bought too early.

It probably wouldn't make sense for you to pull the trigger on this one for the price considering you probably have several in your collection....plus the crappy pictures they had, and the sloppy reddish varnish made it hard to see the full potential...I certainly wouldn't have bought it based on the auction pics!

ETA Oh, yeah, barrel band is byf over 1 in shield, 44A37

I went through my database on byf/svw/svwMB (a lot of rifles.. took awhile) and did not see another double stamp like this. I do agree though it is just sloppiness as it could not serve another purpose.

I am surprised this rifle came out so well! I had this one on file from the auction and those pics suck bad.. btw, you did a first rate job of the repair.

Yeah, lots of armorers safties. Thanks for reporting the barrel code!

Here you go....and a shot of the capture papers that came with it...of course there is no s/n, so who knows if they actually came with this gun, but they look legit to me...

Quite a few late rifles have A37 barrel codes, and yours falls in line with those.

As per a request here are some pics of the bands and front end...not that it will help much, they are completely unmarked...

I have a no-letter byf 45 sn in the 43k range I think with the exact follower. Milled/blued with the eagle and cap "S". Will try and grab a pic.

Question regarding pitting on Sauer K98s ......

Friends:

I have noted several Sauer K98s dating from 1940 through 1944 that have pitting.
Are Sauer K98s more prone to surface pitting than K98s by other makers?? If so,
does anyone have an explanation for this phenomenon??

Thanks, neelyja
