G.98/40 jhv 43 "i" block

Gerard

Collector /Militaria Dealer
Nice rifle 100% matched and has it's site hood. Notice double or over stamped eagle at receiver serial number. First one was crooked and low, second one over top was perfect. Interesting letter on top of stock. Not sure what it represents. Comments welcome. Thanks

As it's a 3 pc stock, here are the internal numbers. Also, I missed phtographing the matching bayonet lug and that little section at the end of the bolt that has the serial number correctly electropenciled.

It is likely an "i" block. N block may not be a possibility for any G98/40 as the highest serial numbers noted are currently in the M block. The G98/40 serial numbering did not start over with the year changes. It started in the no block with jhv 41 production and simply kept on going from year to year with the end result likely being somewhere in the M block during jhv 44. I'd be excited to see an N block rifle, but if it is ever found it will be a jhv 44 and not a jhv 43 like this example.

Thanks, my mistake, it was the script letter style that threw me off.

Nice,

Photo's do this one no justice either. The stock on this rifle has great color and a really nice grain running through it.. Another good score !

Might be an i with no period on top ???

The serial numbering scheme for the G.98/40's went something like this:

jhv 41 no letter block into the d or e block

jhv 42 somewhere in the d or e block into somewhere in the g block

jhv 43 somewhere in the g block into somewhere in the L block

jhv 44 somewhere in the L block into somewhere in the M block

I'm not much of an expert on the suffix script. I just know about the overall scheme and this makes it easier to decipher the letters. I still occasionally have to look at my serial number list to make sure the suffix letters are what I think they are. At some point I'm hoping to assemble photos of all the letters but there are still a few suffix letters which I have not seen.

agreed. I am always screwing up the suffixes for these in my database. Nice rifle for sure.

Sorry all, got carried away as I DID it! This came from a vet in the 455th Engineers. He picked it and a k98 (mismatched) in Aachen. He said "He went in the front door and the nazis ran out the back". He also had 2 bayonets (a k98 and a Polish eagle):hail:. But I missed those.

I just checked my serial number list and I'm missing D and F blocks also.

Hello,

i have 4 d (D) blocks in my database but not a super great picture to use for my letter block project but way clear enough to see its a d (D) block. I have only 1 f (F) block again not great enough for the project. someday i hope.

newly inherited jhv 43 98/40 ammo question!!

Hi guys,
im new to the forum as i just inherited my grandpas mauser, which i have learned is technically not a mauser since it is a jhv 43 98/40. I had a helluva time figuring out why my 43 had an N serial, sooooo I gues it's actually an I. I referenced some of the pics here. I truly appreciate this sight for reference so thanks. MY main question.....I have only shot the rifle a dozen times or so and I love it but should I stay away from the new prod euro ammo? The stuff is 30 grains heavier but velocity is still way above the 170 grain i'm shooting. Would this put undue stress on the rifle? I'm not looking to put down a buffalo but it is like half the price of domestic ammo.
About my rifle just if anyone interested: jhv 43 g98/40 serial 7xxx I block
*sporterized (bummer)
*missing sight hood (I want to replace)
*mismatched floor plate serial number 6xxx w/ a WaA58 stamp (the 8 could b a 6 or 3 but I think 8) so hungary "41-42)
*mismatched bolt serial number A 30xxx i read it could be from a hungarian M43
*screw-in rear sling mount (also bummer, instead of finding a traditional "thru the stock sling" but hey I think he paid like $25 for this an 3 othe guns way back in the day
*buttplate doesn't seem to have any stamp/serial

*stock, barrel, rear sight matching

blueing is good i donno if it's technically very good but it may be. and stock is is good condition also, but missing some of the eagle stamps (maybe worn, it does have the serial number though)

I anyone could shoot me a rough est. on value that would be great. It's perfect timing cuz the gun show is at the farm show complex in harrisburg in a few weeks, so hopefully I can continue my learning.

Welcome to the forum. Any modern production ammo in 8x57JS caliber should be fine so long as your rifle is serviceable. The bolt with a prefix letter and a 5 digit serial number is from an early 43M. Value for what you described is around $300 give or take $50. Some of the individual parts tend to go for higher than expected prices when found and these include the bands and bayonet mount, fore ends, front sight hoods, and extractors. Pretty much the parts most often missing or broken, and/or what someone would need to do a sporter rescue.

Ammo

Great thanks.
Only question is, can u define serviceable, u mean it's complete and in "shoot able" condition? Also I'm crossing my fingers for a sight hood, I know it's a super long shot, but if not does anyone out there still reproduce them? I would like it to be marked inside so as not to be confused that I am trying to pass off a "fake". Possibly my initials inside.
