Well-known member
Hi
I bought a 1916 Erfurt AZ mauser rifle today at a gun show. It is all matching except for the front band and the stacking rod. And the set screws great barrel nice shine. I hope I can get lucky and the same number to make the rifle correct. Any members out there have Gewehr 98AZ parts??
Serial number is 8323 cc.. Stock and handguard match as well. The only proof on the stock I can see is the proof on the bottom.
Parts needed
Front band 23
Stacking Rod 23
Regards
Bob

Bob, Are you sure on that serial number? Looks more like 9861 cc? Can you image the RR? Regarding the stock, if it lacks the cypher and acceptance and is not serialed externally, it is probably an armorers stock. They usually only have an acceptance at the wrist and or along the bottom. Most are serialed internally though (some externally)

Also the rifle is a Kar.98a, or just Karabiner 98, these are not Kar.98AZ, though some older books (and more recent ones that rely upon old books) and many on the forum use the designation. I am a little perplexed on where the designation actually came from, as Storz doesn't actually use this exact designation when describing the trials rifles. I know John Walters used it, possibly Ludwig Olson, others perhaps, but during the war, and before it, the rifle was always just the Karabiner 98, every period document that I have seen uses this designation, and in the interwar period they adopted the designation Karabiner 98a, to differentiate it from the Karabiner 98b.

I sold most of my 98a parts a couple years back, nice parts are in demand, and can pull good money. Unlike the Gew.98 and 98k, the "German" 98a wasn't used by a lot of foreign countries and suitable parts are harder to find. If the Kar98a were a more popular rifle, and had not so many been sporterized, the parts would be even harder to find and more expensive.

MY Gew 98a 1916 Erfurt

Hi
I thank you for your help. Your are right I have seen the way they word the (* Gew rifle ) 98 AZ, 98 a. So for now on I will only call it correct as a 98 a.
The stock is matching inside as well as the hand guard. then it is a armorers stock. It only has the proof on the wrist. A large one and a small one.. My eyes are not what they used to be, you are right about the serail number it is 9861 c ..
I like rifles that have been rebuilt through the armoures. .I am just happy that they put most of the matching parts back together and nor mix them up. So only two parts not correct and the sets screws is not to bad!!! May be I may get lucky and find the two missing parts.
The right side of the receiver looks like kax?? Is that right? I hope the pictures are clear for you..
Regards
Bob

Thanks Bob, but this is the left receiver and siderail. The other side is the right receiver and has the acceptance stamps, which is what I was after, if possible. Of course I suppose how you hold the rifle determines the sides, but generally the right side is the acceptance side and the left side is the serial, fireproof and siderail. The "Kax" is actually "Kar" or "Kar.98" which stands for Karabiner 98, the designation of this Modell98 rifle.

Sure sounds like it is a period stock replacement, has everything you would expect for one.
