Hello,

The first addition to my document collection for 2012.

Unteroffizier (sergeant) Heinz Hummel belonged in the fall of 1944 to the 3th company of mixed Panzer recon section 520, a unit equipped with 10 SPW vehicles; they were under the command of the LXXXth Army Corps as a part of the 5th FJ Division, then active in Luxemburg.
In this period he got the EKII, the award document is signed by the commanding general of the LXXXth Army Corps: Franz Beyer (KC 1941).
In September '44 his company is transferred to the famous Panzer Lehr Division and with this unit he will fight in the battle of the bulge.
He now belongs to the 3th company of the recon section of the Panzer Lehr division, for operation Wacht am Rhein it is the backbone of Kampfgruppe Fallois.
On December 16 1944 they break through the American held frontline and push forward towards Bastogne, they encircle the town but don't stay behind for the siege, they push forward towards the Meusse river on Christmas day 1944 their advance is halted in Buissonville, they take the bridge but are then hit by air attacks and air directed artillery fire; it is during this engagement that he gets wounded.
His CO Major von Fallois will get the KC for the battle of the bulge, sergeant Heinz Hummel is awarded the EKI, the award document signed by Fritz Bayerlein (KC 1941, Oak leafs 1943, Swords 1944) and the Panzerkampfabzeichen in Bronze.

Great docs and history Peter! It's neat to be able to connect an individual with a historic event. It "personalizes" what is normally just a dry recitation of history.
