Another LSR K98 found!

Hi Everyone,
I just picked up an original long side rail sniper and wanted to share some pics. This rifle was brought into a shop near me where the owner (reportedly the grandson of the WW2 vet who brought it back) asked to have the shop clean up the rifle so he could begin to shoot it. Apparently the grandson had only recently found it in the attic. Long story short, I saw the rifle sitting there when I went in to pick up another k98 I was transferring in and managed to buy the rifle through the gunshop from the owner a week later. The rifle is a phosphate bcd4, s/n 93081 no letter suffix. Aside from cleaning the bore, I didn't do a thing to it. The scope & mount, floorplate/spring/follower, and rear action screw are missing, but otherwise the rifle is as good as it gets. It's all matching, the stock is unsanded, and the bore is perfect. I did briefly disassemble it, and it turns out the stock and handguard are un-numbered as well as the bands. Bands & triggerguard are stamped, qnw marked triggerguard has no provisions for "capture" screws. The owner told the shop he believed there was a magazine in the attic for this rifle, which was interesting, but I would think it likely have had only a floorplate. It is interesting to note, that the floorplate locking pin in the triggerguard is missing which may or may not support the mystery mag story. Any help in locating replacing the missing parts with correct items would be sincerely appreciated. What do you guys think?

Congratulations on your find. It's nice to see these snipers still coming out of the woodwork. Someone last year posted a bring-back LSR, and another member had the matching mount/scope, so ya never know!

Aww, beautiful. How I would love to find what you did in that condition.

Thanks for posting!

Jeff

I forgot to ask... does this one have a smooth or checkered butt plate?
Thanks,
Mike

I was just looking over the serial numbers posted on the serial number thread of the Gunboards site, and someone posted 93080!!!!!

Wow that is some awsome luck finding a rifle like that in that condition! What part of the country are you from?

Very nice! It's a good feeling to find one of these, isn't it? ;) Still keeping an eye out for the missing mount (and hopefully accompanying scope and base) from mine.

I doubt there'd ever be a way to know for sure what happened to the scope and hardware but I've heard they were sometimes removed and tossed by surrendering German snipers in an effort to not advertise their role, since snipers were often reviled. I've also heard scopes were often removed and put on hunting rifles by returning GIs, since German scopes were high quality and cheap (free!).

Slow down fellas. Dave Roberts owns 93080 and the mount is with the rifle. He's standing right here next to me in Louisville with no pants on.

From serial # the bek fits much better. Matter of factly it always caused me concerns why Ajack 52293 is on such an "early" rifle. All late Ajacks I know are either unmounted or have unnumbered mounts. I think that the bek was originally on this mount and mount 93080 was restored and Ajack put on it because it looks better. Whoever did this should try his best to put the ensemble back in original shape.
