Stalingrad bunker lantern

Here is a piece of WWII German field equipment that is not seen very often.
It's a lantern made mainly of Bakelite. It is marked Pres/AG 1940 in a hard to
photograph (see pics).
I got this lantern from a friend of mine who goes to now Volgagrad to dig
every summer. He told me these lanterns are the Number One desired
souvenir of the local Russian diggers.
This one is in remarkably good condition for it's age and I believe it
would function today if I had some instructions on how to make it work.
It uses a mixture of carbide and water (I believe). Maybe somehow close
to those carbide cannons that we had as kids?
Tks,
Bob
