M1898 Sawback Bayonet

Rest In Peace
Got this with a recent rifle purchase and thought it might be interesting for those collecting and interested in the older Mauser rifles. From what I can dig up it was produced in 1903 for the M1898 GEW rifle. The blade measures 21.5" and it is unit marked. Any thoughts on ID, rarity or comments? I am not a bayonet collector so anyone that might be interested in adding it to their collection, shoot me a PM. Enjoy...

Very nice! I've always wanted one of these, but honestly haven't been watching them closely enough to guess a value. If I understand the markings well enough, the bayonet is from the 88th Infantry Regiment out of Mainz, Hanau.

You are right, 18th AK at Mainz, at the Rhine in western Germany. Good bayonet, very tough to find really, though the sawbacks tend to be in nicer shape when found. This is the first sawback from this IR recorded by me, though I have some recorded from Hörster (1905) and Alex Coppel (also 1905). Carter lists 3 known, an Erfurt (1901), and two WKC's (both 1905).

These command a lot of attention and can get expensive at auction. The really expensive ones have matching bards, as Mike stated, they can get nuts.. if you have at least a sawback bard that might help. I sold a Garde marked one a couple years back for like $1600 but it was matching and really nice. This one is harder to say, maybe $400-500, if it isn't bent. These Sg98's can get bent, but it doesn't seem to hurt value much, if the rest is there.
