Finally found one of these. This is a Dutch M95 Carbine bayonet as modified by the Nazis. The blade has been cut from the original length of 483mm to 280mm. It is different from the modified rifle bayonet in that the pommel has been turned 90 degrees to prevent the release button and sharp edges from wearing holes in the soldier's overcoat when slung across the back. Rifle and carbine bayonets are not interchangeable.
The scabbard appears to be a bicyclists scabbard with several repairs and/or modifications. Like the rifle scabbards, the scabbard was shortened and instead of replacing the brass ferrule, the ends were sewn together. Half the stitching is gone unfortunately. The three original brass rivets on the belt loop are gone and have been replaced by two steel rivets. The original Dutch strap was broken and/or removed (you can see the two holes where the rivets originally were) and replaced by what appears to be a K98k frog strap! There is also a small stitched repair just below the strap. The original Dutch rack/rifle number and a hard to read unit mark of some kind (G.F.P.I?) have been lined out and another number (possibly German) '6966' has been added.
I'm not 100% on this one with the odd repairs/mods and the tooling marks, but the blade cut is textbook for a carbine bayonet and the scabbard looks right except maybe the strap. Plus I got it cheap. Any thoughts?
Oh, and I couldn't help myself and added a pic of it mounted on a No3 OM (with a possibly German sling sewn on).
