why are these in a special 6 digit serial?? any meaning or history why?? i now have 2 examples and both are model G's

Hello vaughn,
Do you have detailed information on the other G4x with 6 digit serial?
Would like to know:
what reticle, rear ring with rounded or square cutout for locking, what range markings. Where did the scope come from? Scandinavia?

What I do not like on the shown scope:
square cutout on the rear ring for locking.
profile of front ring.
first digit of serial is different font.
range markings. the "1" ist stamped, the "2","4" and "6" are engraved.

What do we learn? Nothing.
To me it looks like an original Bavarian sniper scope that was reworked/restamped for what so ever reason.
Maybe it was inteded for illegal export after WWI?!

What do you think about the markings on the rings? WWI or post WWI?
From the serial#, the scope is a late 1918.

Hello Amberg,

your should be Reichwehr sniper set up using a WWI scope due to serial would be probably a Kar98b set up with the letter suffix present would be my guess. the Danzig sporter rifles never got to letter suffixes from my observations so far. sorry i have been away posting the 6 digit serial scope now no mounts present and looks well used and its only 3 digits off of the other one posted thus far.

Gerard G4x:
Not sure what to make out of these serials. The "2" is stamped in different font. Maybe a mistake by the employee who stamped the serial#, that was not corrected. With all the brass parts, these scopes were not late war made. Put together from remaining parts after the war? Probably not.
My guess: the correct serial#s are 23(8)680 and 23(8)683 or 2386(8)0 and 2386(8)3.
When I looked at these serials first, my first impession was that one of the "8" was stamped incorrectly.

Gerard M4x:
Well, it might be a Reichswehr period sniper scope, but I have some concerns. It would be the one and only pre WWII scope with acceptance markings on the mount. In WWII only LSR, ZF4 and ZF41 mounts bear an acceptance stamp (WaA). Prior WWII you do not find any acceptance markings on the mounts.
Weimar Police?
If I remember right CB had a sniper rifle that had similar acceptance stamps. Maybe he can chime in.

i had valleysniper post the photos so you can see the difference between the ring on the Gerard M4 scope and original rings.traditionally the rifle serial letter block was never used on the rings.the rings were not imperial inspected since the rings were commercial made and fitted.the rings are finished out more roughly than the original rings.
if the rig is original,it was probably used post WW1 by some other country,not germany.
this type mount is not WW1 period since it appeared Post WW1.
this type mount is usually seen on the Danziger small ring sporting rifles made just after the end of the war.
usually see this type mount used with Gerard or OIGEE scopes.
the first 2 photos are comparing the K98b front ring to the commercial front ring.the K98b ring is on the left side.
