ZF41, information.

Hello all.

I am new here. I am from Norway and have just started to learn about optics used by the Germans during WWII.
They sure had some superb optics back then, that even today are of high quality.

Butm, a odd scope like the ZF41, hmmm. What was it used for? Urban snipers? It is so far away from the shooters eye, why mount it so far away?
How was/are it to use?

A interesting scope, maybe I will find one some day.

All help and information is good for me.

The ZF-41 was originally designed as a Sharpshooters rifle. The idea was to have one rifle per squad with a scoped rifle that in the hands of a sharpshooter would be capable of taking out high valued targets (Machine Gunners, Pill boxes, strong points). However, upon development the ZF-41 was designated as a Sniper Rifle. Due to limited magnification (1.5x) this rifle fell short of this purpose and was down graded to a standard rifle.

The reason the scope was mounted so far was to accomodate for the extremly long eye relief. If you do an internet search, another member of this site has their own website dedicated to the ZF-41 K98.
