I had posted this rifle a while back over on gunboards, just figured I would post it here also for reference. basically the gem of my Gew.98 part of my collection.

had one of my customers drop this one in my lap. gave me a bolt mismatch 1906 DWM gew.98 with nice original bayonet. closet fresh condition. unsanded, unboinked.

Closet fresh condition, only thing I have been cleaning is the bore. It was complete and total sewer pipe, after much scrubbing it has a bit of shine to it and the rifling is clear and sharp. On inspection with a bore scope the roughness is rust "scales" for lack of a better term. there is no pitting at all, each time i brush it out more of these scales are gone. I feel that this bore will clean up to about 98% after some shooting. Anyways, here it is, and the bayonet. There is no pitting under the wood and the bluing under the wood is 100%, receiver is still bright under the wood also. the barrel above the wood appears to have about 80%+ bluing left.

Here are a few pictures. The rest are in the gallery at the link.

I love this rifle, just resides in the back of my safe. Had it out today because a friend of mine is new to collecting mausers and he needed some gun porn.

Internet problems the last few days... hard to get on, needless to say view so many pictures.

The DWM/06 is a really nice rifle, early DWM's can be very hard to find at all, not many were made 1899-1904, and 1905-1906 weren't large numbers either.

To show just how rare 1899-1904 DWM production was, in 1905 DWM made more rifles than they made 1899-1904 altogether! In 1906 they made a little more than 1905, but roughly equal. The reason I believe for this phenomena is that DWM was working on the naval contract, small numbers really, but almost all original-matching 1899-1904 DWM are naval rifles, and they are common up until 1906 too, though they start to intermingle in 1905 with Army production.

Anyway, until 1905-06 most manufacture of the Gewehr98 was undertaken at the arsenals, the patent holders made a piddling amount of rifles by comparison. After that it evens out and then when the 98a start to be manufactured, it is actually reversed for a few years. So if you find any original-matching 1899-1904 MO or DWM tackle it and don't let it get loose! (1905-1914 aren't too shabby either- DWM stops altogether in 1910, the MG08 & P08 production occupying their operations, but any pre-war MO/DWM is a nice find if original-matching.)

BTW, nice to see the Simson, they are hard to find too, nice original-matching are nearly unheard of for sale.

Thanks, most seem to have Krupp barrels, my "a" block has one and most others recorded too.

Would be nice if I could record more Imperial barrels, it is one of the hardest things to record, at least amongst the items that are original to a rifle. Where with the stocks and component part mix, acceptance pattern trending is hampered by reworking and replaced parts (and wartime subcontracting), the barrel is often manufacturer original, but few are willing to record a BC on an Imperial rifle. Only Danzig & Erfurt routinely placed the BC above the wood line and it is pretty hard to get a good BC on an Imperial rifle. (I have several thousand 98k BC, but only a few hundred Gewehr98's.. in time enough will be collected to formally trend the patterns, but not today.)

The Simson is a nice one, great shooter. I'll add the Simson also has a Krupp barrel on it.
