This seems to be the forum I have been looking for with discussion on Mauser smallbores. I hope there are members here that are also interested in the early target and sporting models as well. The over all appearance, of the Mauser KKW I acquired is good but a close inspection revealed that the receiver was tapped, 2 holes in the side, for a scope mount. The proofs, Eagle/N on the barrel and receiver have been ground off but you can see parts of the barrel proof. The blue has been touched up and the rear site, bayonet lug and butt plate were blued. The rear barrel band had a hole drilled in it for a screw to secure it. The front barrel band, the barrel band spring, ram rod and site hood are missing. The barrel and bolt are the only serial numbered parts and they match (1788) and the bolt proof mark is intact. The stock has 2 holes for sling hardware and the stock has been varnished. The butt of the stock has a SA unit/group number (5/171)but there are no serial numbers in the stock channel or on the hand guard. So these are the issues, good and bad. I am planning on stripping the varnish and replacing the upper barrel band and the barrel ban spring. I would also remove the blue on the bayonet lug, rear site and butt plate. I figure at this point minor restoration can't hurt. I would leave the other issues as they are but I am open to suggestions. From my research Mauser only made about 5000-10000 of the KKWs so they are not that common and I am happy to have this example even with the issues. Regards,
