1917 JP Sauer & Sohn, matching

Well, I'm like a little kid at Christmas and I can't wait to share the joy. Went to a small gunshow this morning, picked up a CZ27 (posted in the handgun forum) and was just about to leave when something caught my eye. Someone had walked in with a Gew 98 and of course I had to go check it out. Turns it's an all-matching, unsanded, closet-fresh 1917 JP Sauer. Deep stamps in the wood, every number matching, including a matching cleaning rod, and with a pleasant patina on the metal. The only drawback is the missing lower sling swivel, but I wasn't about to be picky. The gentleman had found the gun among his father's belongings (a WWII vet) and believed he had gotten it from his father (a WWI vet). I'll post pictures when I get the chance and proper lighting.

EDIT: Crappy cellphone preview.

Congratulations, it looks beautiful and it is a hard to find rifle in that condition, especially all matching. Don't worry about the rear sling swivel, it is not missing, the rear swivel was detachable and was permanently attached to the sling. All you need to finish it off in fine style is a correct and complete WWI German sling.:happy0180:

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough in my terminology. The whole mount is missing. Here's another crappy picture to show. And thanks for the comments!

At least you have the screws!

A tough rifle to find, in this condition, even more difficult. 1916 S&S (JPS) is more common, 1917 next, 1915 & 1918 extremely elusive. There is no way to estimate totals, beyond the group total Storz gives from original documents, the consortium shared serial numbers and they are quite mixed it seems. In the database there are twice the number of 1916 S&S recorded (84) than 1917 dated (41), but few are anywhere near original-matching.

I'll be sure to post detailed pictures as soon as I can. Interesting stamps on the right side of the stock, as well. The magazine follower number is overstamped with a correction.

That's too nice not to be complete!

I have an I extra swivel base and the detachable swivel that goes with it I will be happy to send you, no charge, PM me and I will send it off.

Finally managed to take some pictures of the rifle. A great many thanks to CLG who sent me a sling mount without wanting anything in return! Thanks to him, this rifle is now complete. You'll note that the magazine follower had an error and was overstamped (appears to have been 18 instead of 09).

That is a nice rifle, about as nice as I have seen for one of these. It would be nearly impossible to upgrade, - these are usually a little well used, especially the stock, use to own a really nice one a few years back and it was nice but not this nice.

Anyway, you have a hell of a fine representative example and a rifle that will only grow in value. These are tough this nice!

BTW, it is also the confirmed high for JPS/17, there are "reports" of "q" blocks but none have been confirmed. It is probably a very late 1917 production rifle.
