Luftwaffe pilot spared the lives of B-17 crew

There was a segment on NPR radio about this a couple days ago. Both men have passed away but the man that befriended them wrote a book about this and their lives before and after WW2 . An amazing story. In the radio program a woman called in and described how her father was shot down off the coast of italy and he and his crew were captured when they reached dry land. Her father spoke polish and one of the germans was apparently fluent in or was polish and let them go !.

Amazing stories, indeed.

I've always tried to glean as much information from our veterans as I could when they'd talk about their experiences, as one day there just won't be any of them around. And a sad day that will be.
