Superb cyq P38 m-block rig...Range Report

After three months of interminable waiting my cyq P38 arrived. 1506 m block puts it in the middle of February 1944. Everything is exceptional about it. Finish is nearly perfect with the slightest holster wear. Two jvd/P38 marked magazines (Erste Nordbohmische Metallwarenfabrik, Niedrerinsiede, Czechoslovakia), and a soft shell holster marked ‘P38’ and ‘jwa 44’ (Moritz Stecher, Lederwerk, Freiburg) in like new condition. Some debris in bore should clean out quickly.

I'll let the pictures talk. This is the most I've paid for any firearm outright (have even-traded once for more cash value than this). Although my Luger later this year will cost me half again as much!

This cost $1000. I paid retail, but I got what I paid for. Local finds over the last year are poor: another m-block with 80% finish for $750, a byf 44 with 30% finish for $750, an AC42 90% with mismatched mag for $1200, a byf43 for $800 about 85%. All were pistol and one mag. This one beats them all. I went through a specialty dealer with whom I have worked before and trust. The pistol alone was $700 before I added another mag and the holster. Even at $700 its only $100 more than a RC P38 on many well known sites.

The Luger I'm working on is a MG unit marked 1917 Erfurt, 90% finish, all matching save for an unnumbered replacement Erfurt magazine for $1400.

ah, I misread that you paid twice as much for this P38 as a luger

Range report. Glorious day, spring has sprung, flowers blooming, and taking a ride in the antique to go shooting!

Went to my friend's range in Holbrook. As I wasn't going to try the field of mud with my sneakers to set up a target, I settled for the 2-foot circular steel gong. I used the Gew98M - I hadn't used that one at distance - and rang the gong 40 of 45 times with '53 Yugo surplus.

Went to the indoor range and shot three pistols I'd never tried before; my new cyq P38, and my friend's new 1918 DWM Luger and his 7.65 Ortgies. The Luger is a dog, pitted, very poor bore with almost no rifling in the middle, but a good crown and all matching save for a repro wood bottom magazine. By all rights is shouldn't shoot. I had to get ready and prepare for my Luger in June. We shot at 30 feet using my Winchester 115gr RN/FMJ and his Remington 7.65.

cyq: I love the feel of this and the wide, easy sights, no issues; 16 rounds.

Luger: Little awkward at first, but...; 14 rounds.

Not the best looking, but it's the results that count and only $695 for his:

Ortgies: tight sights but shoots fine; 5 rounds. On my list.

I want to ride to the range in that old Plymouth. Great pistols and very good shooting!

Almost...

PlymouthMauser, as in Plymouth, MA. The car is a 1966 Pontiac Star Chief Executive. A short lived car with a Bonneville body and a Catalina Ventura interior - an attempted niche for a big, but less luxurious car. Didn't sell well. This car has $1000 worth of factory options including AC, which pushed the price to $4200 - $64 less than the starting price of a Corvette. The public bought either the Bonneville or the Catalina; only 45K Executives were produced.
