1916 Erfurt Kar98a all matching war horse

Picked this up in a trade recently, first Kar98a I've had in many years. It's all matching and I don't know that I've ever seen one with more convincing field wear. I think it's safe to say this one saw some serious action in the trenches. Lots of patina and it looks like the soldier who had it did a lot of low crawling across no-man's land. The bore is surprisingly good.

Congrats on the rifle, looks like a nice honest rifle! It's a later Erfurt for 1916 with the ii suffix. Erfurt would get to the mm suffix for 1916 and surpass that for 1917 production. Any chance you can get some pics of the rest of the numbered parts and Imperial acceptance on them as well as the bottom of the bolt flat and close up of right receiver stamps? Some here track trends of Imperial acceptance with manufacturer.

Had the seller in 2019 had taken the time to use these pictures he would have done better (I didn't save the result but with such pictures I doubt it sold well...)

BTW, offhandedly this rifle reminded me of a repeated promise related to stormtroopers, - when I see such rifles it reminds me of the origins of the doctrine or at least its German implementation. I have long been a part-time bookseller, 30 years or more, and longer still a book collector (as a kid I asked for books for Christmas!)

Anyway, during my ebay days I haunted German ebay looking for accessories, company advertising and literature etc... and I came across a periodical from July 1916 displaying a very common picture often attributed to 1918. The periodical is dated 1916 so the picture date could not be 1918 era. Your rifle reminded me of this picture and the possibility that a rifle such as yours could have been a trophy from a brave young man like pictured below.

*** it took me over an hour on my old computer database to locate this series of pictures, - often my failed promises of database help is related to the fact my main research is on a computer I bought in 2002 and my current computer is a gift from MikeF, otherwise I wouldn't even be online... which would be welcome if not for this forum. I hate modernity and the internet... I love books!

Very interesting information, thanks! The gentleman I received the rifle from also gave me a German postcard from a couple of weeks before WW1 and it is a photo of soldiers armed with these rifle. I will scan it and upload it here.

Too bad it lost the sling along the way, looks like an original. The collector I got it from purchased it in 2021.

The butt stock wear is strangely appealing to me. I’ve never seen a wear pattern like that. Nice rifle! Thank you for the good photos.
