Hi everyone,
While I don’t own a Mauser rifle, I was fortunate to come across five, when I was deployed to Kosovo in 1999. While I don’t remember which specific 98 model they were, they looked like they had been dipped in cosmoline and were well used. All five had the SS rune and Totenkopf stamped on the left side of the barrels (one had a “2” next to the SS rune), but none had dates stamped on them. There were factory stampings on the receiver rings, but no other military markings anywhere on them. They cleaned up well and were incredibly accurate. I have 35mm pics of me firing one of them; when I find them, I’ll post them.
One day I’ll buy a rifle, but for now I have a matching numbers Clemen & Jung 1940 bayonet. The frog has a tear and needs to be repaired but, until I find a competent leathersmith who can effect a near-invisible repair, it’ll have to wait.
