Not Sure If This Is Right For Forum, But A Hungarian 35M...

EOD - bombs and bullets
I am not sure if this forum is right for this, but I thought I'd post, as its the fore-runner to the 98/40...and while not a Mauser, the 98/40 was a German contract gun...

Anyway....I picked this up at a local show this past weekend. Went in Friday night to set up, a buddy next to our tables had this on his table...he just picked it up the week before at a small local show south of us.

It is missing the hood, and the lower butt stock mounted sling swivel, and the stock had been lightly to mediumly sanded. He wanted $250 for it, and since I have never seen one in the wild, I snagged it...not really my collection focus, but close since I collect mainly WWII German weapons....I do have a 98/40, so I figured this is cloes enough. Plus I am Hungarian, so added bonus!

I took it all apart earlier this week, and finally got a chance to clean it up today, it had some light surface rust, and plenty of grime inside. I had hit the stock with my stock stain....a mix of dark brown and scarlet RIT dye in alcohol, then today rubbed in a coat of BLO.

Took some pics while apart, not much in the way of markings, unlike the 98/40's....the barrel, receiver, and trigger guard have this "E" in a circle mark, the forearm and handguard have an "A" in a circle. The buttstock has a Hungarian military crest stamped under the buttplate. Bolt is completely unmarked.

I am really happy to have found it, I gotta believe its a pretty scarce gun....it'll look good next to the 98/40. Now to find a 43M...

Looks fantastic. I love it. It is in the right place as far as I'm concerned. Great pics.

Well done and a rifle that one seldom sees. Pic stickied.

Some more Hungarian rifles. 35M rifles A,C & E blocks. The A is 12000 higher than pzjgr's and is '39 accepted. C block is '40 accepted and E block has no acceptance date, like all 43m rifles I think. JL

Great picture! Very nice.

Wow, Ham, those are some very cool pics of the 35M in action....as you said, you rarely see them anywhere. This is the first one I have ever seen in person...Interesting to me too, as I am 100% Hungarian extraction....One of my Great Grandfathers was a Hungarian cavalryman. You don't see much Hungarian militaria at all really....

And JL, those are some fantatstic rifles! As I understand it, the bayo's are as hard to come by as the rifles....

Great stuff!

ETA Hopefully if John Wall comes through with another batch of repro hoods, I will have a hood for mine too...

The hoods he had made last time were very nice and way cheaper than an original, if you can find one. Most bayonets for these cost more than the rifles. JL

Still trying to get together with the sight hood manufacturer. Unfortunately, our schedules don't match well now. I will have to take a half day off to get to his shop since he moved a few months ago. However, tomorrow or Wednesday look like good possibilities.
Regards,
John
