33/40 handguard screws

finally sourced a original 33/40 handguard,
picked up a pair of screws from an online vendor. Screws are non scalloped 33/40 re-pops.

however screws are a hair too long, the bolt won't retract when the screws are in all the way. Rear one needs to be backed out about a turn.

are there washers that were used from the factory under the screw heads? Thinking about hitting the screw with a grinder to shorten it up a smidge seeing how its not original.

everything else on this gun is original and numbers matching (bolt MM) so i want to keep it as original as possible.

Here are a couple pictures of the issue.
You can see it’s about 2 threads too long.

The length of the shaft is 39mm.

so,
i either stumped the community,
-or-
i asked a really stupid question that i should know the answer to.

i'm guessing the latter.......:facepalm::laugh:

There should be a spacer tube in the stock for the rear trigger guard screw. If this spacer is missing, one can over tighten the screw to the point where it protrudes on the top side causing interference with the bolt.

I want to think that the spacer is there, but i'll double check at home.

oddly enough, if i take a K98 screw and use it, it works fine. the 33/40 screw is just a blonde one longer and interferes.
