German Mauser ZF41 Sniper. How'd I do on this one?

Hello all,

Brand new to the forum and I'd sincerely appreciate the experts opinion on two German Mausers I just bought. I'll post the first one here, and the second shortly in another thread. I've gone through a crash course of what the red flags are regarding fake K98 sniper setups and I have found both good and bad with regard to this purchase.

The Good (in my VERY limited understanding):

!: The manufacturer (DUV) is one of the three companies that made these guns.

2: The rail spacing and edges of the mount seem to be correct.

3: The scope mount has the model on the inside of the leg closest to the shooter.. The repro mount available at Sarco does not have this writing.

Again, this is just what I've read going through various boards and sites.

The Bad (or so I think):

1: It does not have the sniper "waffled" buttplate.

2: The scope itself has a small piece of thin metal on it. This was called out as being fake on another board. The scope markings do seem to match on the ZF41 database though. Also, some info I found on RJ's site states that ALL (I'm usually skeptical when some one uses absolutes like "all" but...) of the repros are branded CXN. My scope is not. I also found an original scope that has the flat metal tab on the rain shield. The u in "duv" has a distinct tail like the original pictured on RJ's, but the spacing of the duv in relation to the Waffenamp is more like the copy. Ugh.

3: The cutout for the scope mount is... I don't know. One board said it was right, another said it was wrong.

Without further ado.... here she is:

More pictures in second post.

The numbers on the receiver, bolt and both of the bottom plates match. I could only find one set of numbers on the barrel band and they are hard to see with the sling attached. I saw a "24" (which does not match the receiver number).

Any and all help is appreciated, as I paid good money for this rifle, and want to know if I did okay.

EDIT: More info: "avk 50" followed by "42" is stamped on the receiver on the next section above duv. This is past the chamber but before the rear sight. heavy_mech was kind enough to help out and inquired about markings on the recoil lug. There is nothing I can see, but it does have a strong patina on it. I checked with a lit magnifier and couldn't see anything on either side.

So it's a duv receiver finished by Gustloff in their s block. The timeframe for a Type 1 Oculus seems correct too as does the lubricant marking. Is it possible this made it to Gustloff and they finished it as a zf41? I don't know enough to say so.

I edited some of the info in the main post to reflect my new findings, as well as answers to heavy_mech's questions.

Boy, I hope this thing is good!

First off it should not have a sniper buttplate like younsughest is missing.

I’m not really an expert on the optic variations, but I don’t like the wood cutout for the scope rail. And I’ve never heard of a Gustloff finished zf41....wait for a dedicated optic guy but I don’t have faith in this one

The buttplate isn’t matching, is the stock matching? Can you show any stock markings?

When I bought it, I looked at the stock and couldn't find any markings on it anywhere, but lo and behold, there is a faint Waffenamp and what looks like a capital "H" right below it on the right side of the stock just behind the recoil lug. Picture attached. The markings are very faint, and there does look like there's something below the "H" but I cannot make out what it is. I gave the stock another closer look and couldn't find anything else. Is there another conspicuous place where I should be finding something?

I don't recall seeing anything about Gustloff ZF-41s in Volume 2b. I don't have it in front of me currently, but I'm fairly confident Gustloff didn't make them. As for the stock, I think Gustloff had deleted external markings by 42/43. There aren't any on my Gustloff assembled DUV

Gustloff was not a ZF41 contractor.

Disassemble the rifle and check the barrel channel of the stock and handguard. There should be a serial number. Any markings on the other side of the sight base? And the right receiver should be marked.

No markings on the right side of the receiver that I can see under magnification. No marking on either side of the sight base, but there are markings under the flip-up sight. Picture attached. I also included an image of the receiver in front of the chamber with the "avk 50" marking.

IIRC, Gustloff assembled DUV's were light on receiver inspections. AVK is the barrel provider code and 50 is the steel lot.

Okay, looks like things are making some sense, at least. For what it's worth, I bought this piece from a huge collection of these (You know the story, guy dies and all of his hard work gets sold to an FFL and parted out). I know that having a lot of something doesn't make you an expert, and it doesn't validate the rifle on its own, but it seems that the previous collect knew a fair bit about these. I also did some more research on the scope, and it seems to pass muster based on Kentomon's very detailed thread. One thing I have not been able to determine is, how did we arrive that this is a Gustloff assembled rifle? I don't see their code anywhere on it.

Barrel, bottom metal, stock acceptance, are all big give away a as well some some of the other parts that can be seen.

I’m still not really liking the stock cutout, and there for the scope rail.

I understand on the stock cutout. I saw a couple of pictures from small German sniper (His site is no longer hosted unfortunately) that showed variants with and without the long cutout (I think I'm correct here, but again, I am a rank novice). I don't understand the first part you said about certain things being a big give away. Does that mean that the rifle is bogus? Just trying to learn.

The Gustloff conclusion isn't an easy one, but there's little hallmarks on the rifle. Gustloff manufactured a couple of K98k receivers using Berlin-Lubecker (BLM) marked receivers (DUV). At the end of 1942, BLM ceased K98k production and started production of the G43. Both Gustloff and BLM used receivers manufactured by Astrawerke (indicated by the "lower case L" on the receiver). Astrawerke delivered the DUV marked receivers to Gustloff in late 42/43 and Gustloff used these to assemble rifles. The hallmarks are the Gustloff style serial number and the 749 waffenamt above the roll mark.

Hmmm,

I don't see a lower case "l" on the receiver. Maybe I am perceiving it as a scratch in the finish, but you folks know what to look for? Is it in one of my pictures? I just inspected the rifle again and looks through my posted images and didn't see it. I do see something like that on the main floor plate. I also don't have the Waffenamt above the roll mark, like I've seen on some of these rifles.

In any event, I sincerely appreciate the help.

In your case, it's the serial # style. Gustloff placed the letter after the serial as opposed to below the serial in 1943

And an l would only appear if the receiver was made by astrawerke, which it isn’t as it’s coded duv....

Astrawerke did start to provide receivers to BLM (DUV coded) in late 1941. BLM used both in-house manufactured and Astrawerke receivers for K98k production. I didn't mean to imply that the OP's receiver was made by Astrawerke, more explaining the "l" marking on mine. There are documented Gustloff assembled DUV 42 rifles that had BLM manufactured receivers.
