Yeah surprises of any kind are no fun. Definitely not visible or called out in the auction photos. Having said that, I still think it is the original numbered lug.

It's a rough forging so the scaling is perfectly normal--it's not going to come off so no need to worry.

I'm afraid not, even the last rifles off the line at the end of the war would still have hand guards like you see on the rifle below--or a durofol hand guard which would still be correct on your d block qve.

Unfortunately it looks like your hand guard is a post war replacement. You can notice the differences between yours and the original pictured on the rifle below. If you wanted to, you could search for an original durofol replacement... It might be tough to find but they turn up from time to time...

Congrats on the new K43! It is a very nice looking rifle I don't think your stock has been sanded... Maybe stained sometime after the war... but I do think something looks off about the hand guard--it doesn't look original to me. Vents seem too small/too close together. Do you have more photos?

I'm convinced some leave the factory this way. Agreed, not an issue.
