Finally Matching 1939 BSW Rust Removed

This K98 was shown here on the 26th September 2012 closet fresh.
I will bring to the top the original Post with photos.
I purchased this from the Vets daughter in Maryland and received her fathers details (seems this was a Vet bring back from Italy as he also brought back Italian money).
I lubed the metal with various oils while I tried to find some Bronze Wool (searched New Zealand and Australia).
I wanted to do it right as this is possibly the only matching BSW in New Zealand. Finally I imported some fine Bronze Wool from Brownells, they have 3 grades.
Recently the day came to clean her. I stripped the rifle carefully and worked the metal with the Bronze Wool soaked in Hoppes.
I wasn't sure it was all rust, it looked like cigarette tar, a quick email to Jane the Vets daughter confirmed that 3 people smoked around this K98.
Anyway, one and a half hours later, this is what I have...

Enjoy.

It's gorgeous!! I really don't know you can find such a beauty in New Zealand, I should ask my Dad to look around more often for me. Where's the favious place to locate a K98 in NZ?
Thanks! Regards. Kelly

Never mind New Zealand, there aren't many this nice in the United States either!

Really an exceptional rifle, very hard to find original-matching BSW/39's, even mismatched are pretty rare as very few were actually made by BSW this year. So far the estimated total for 1939 was around 13,000 rifles, and although it strangely has a low rc rate (many more non-rc's are known, a surprising number in decent condition) they are rare in this condition. Many more 1937 (25k) and 1938 (43k) were made and many more have survived in nice condition.

BTW, I have the September 2012 pictures saved if you need them. This is a great improvement!

Absolutely gorgeous! Doesn't get much better than this. Thank you for sharing these pictures!

A BSW 39 in this condition is my personal 'holy grail' of K98 collecting. :hail:

Thanks for the kind words T Hunter, yes out of my bunch this is my favourite.
Also bore is excellent.I have the vets details is there anyone who can help me get his service record.
Alister.
PS why is there no BSW in the picture reference

She is a real beauty and I think we will soon have a pic reference, right Wayne, Mike, Ham?

Piece of advice..

Start saving money right now.

The reason..?

So someday you never have to say " Yah....needed to get some money up to help pay for college/wedding/etc. so I had to sell it".

Cant tell you how many friends and acquaintences have sold a treasured item because of the demands & obligations of family.

And many times those items have been irreplaceable, and this falls in that catagory....you have won the k98 lottery my friend ,remember that.

That should be placed under the catagory of family heirloom...

Should the day come that you are old and infirm and have no one to care for you then that would be the time to sell ..otherwise you will regret the day you sold it for the rest of your life and will be relegated to showing pics to friends of the rifle you "used " to have.

It is always infinitley preferrable to sell something because you want to ,not because you have to.

great job

Most US collectors here can't claim an all matching bsw any year. Both my bsw are bolt mismatch. Awesome job cleaning it, they don't get much better for an early rifle. Bsw is my personal favorite maker followed by bcd because they took over. You should be proud Alister.

Hi Alister,
real beauty:) It's not the only fully matching one in NZ, I have the one from pages 484 and 485(from memory) of Mike Steves and Bruce Karem's book, My one is 1938 all matching one.. But you have the rarer year... If you are up in Auckland let me know let me know..
Regards
Ivo
