Floor plate Variations:

Have spotted 7 different "types" ... with most variability being stamped ones. Here are some observations with pics.

My type designations might be easy to remember... type 2 has 2 spot crimps forward on the floor plate; While the type 3 has three forward crimps. Those "crimps" are either straight like the sides of an "A" or rounded like a "B"

Mfd How ............. Designation........ Trait ........ Inspected Where?
  • Milled............Type 1 A w/ rounded front ..... --
  • Milled............Type 1 B w/ beveled front ..... Unmarked , l
  • Stamped........Type 2 A 2 straight “spots” ....... LU, E/214, unmarked
  • Stamped........Type 2 B 2 rounded “spots” ...... E/ 135
  • Stamped........ Type 3 A 3 straight “spots” ...... qnw
  • Stamped........ Type 3 B 3 rounded “spots” ...... [byf & E/ 135]
  • Stamped........Type 4 Punch marks ................. LU, qnw

Very interesting to see the variations. Just looking at the byf 44's I have out right now and my b block has the type 2B while the h block has the 3B type. It would be interesting to see when the transition from one type to the other occurs and how much overlap there is.

What about the rough surface Steyr/bnz trigger guards and the late war phosphate BCD trigger guards? I have only photos of a Steyr trigger guard.

Best regards Tommy

  • Apparently, the Type 2 was earlier than Type 3.
  • Mauser Ob. (apparently) used 'byf' on Type 3 floor plates not T-2.
  • Did 'dot' make stamped plates? I suspect their floor plates are unmarked as with this dot 1943 (??).
  • Which assemblers/ makers of K98s actually stamped out floor plates in-house?? Seems like few did.

Very interesting thread! I had thought dot and dou got all their stamped FP's and TG's from outside sources.

For milled type 1 B it would be front and back..

Does anyone have a floor plate type to rough date reference? Would the folllowing floor plates be correct for the manufacturer and year specified?

First one looks like mid '44 byf and the second looks like JPS font.

Thanks for the information. What is JPS? Is the best source for dating parts the two books being sold by members of this forum? Also, isn't the second one milled which would mean pre to early WWII?
