1938 S/237 in pictures

S/42

Thunda from down unda
As promised, fairly comprehensive photos of my 1938 Lubeck Kar98k, 95% matching example (only mismatched triggerguard main screws - now with unserialled early screws).

The rifle has LOTS of character. It's FAR from mint, being a nicely used example, albeit with an immaculate bore. Luftwaffe issue.

The pictures don't do it justice - the wood is FAR nicer than this in reality (need a better more neutral backdrop. I did these pics ion a hurry - busy day here!) and beautifully patinated and SMOOTH. The blue is "salty" but nice. Seems where the metal had varnish on for all those years DIDN'T oxidise, but the exposed bits did, forming this slightly mottly look. I can live with it ;)

Lubeck surprised me a little - I expected higher finish polish to the metal than it has - some lathe radial lines still visible on the rear sight collar and barrel. The stock feels NOTICABLY thinner in the wrist and foreend than an Oberndorf stock, and the grip is also a bit more rakish than Oberndorf (it suits me a LOT better than an Oberndorf when I throw it to the shoulder). I was surprised to see the first waffenamt on the grip QUITE off to one side.

It has MOSTLY e/26 stamps (MOST Nazi style, with only 2 weimar style on the butt), but there is an e/211 on the keel behind the serial.

Sorry Paul, I didn't pull it apart today, so no code photos.

So, here it is - a nearly all matching original, Luftwaffe issue Lubeck 1938 Kar98k...

x2 on that..I'd say that rifle was carried very little in its former life. I'm surprized how
much blue survives on the bands and floorplate..1938 is one of my favorite years for k98's you can fill a book just on marking variations...Hey, thats an idea B&M ! Not to mention the dropping of the "s' part way through the year..Most are dropped in the "c' block. Then the transition from wiemar to nazi proofs..38's show a real mix of proofs. Lubeck is scarce to say the least. Who knows you may find the screws someday!!!

I agree! Also the transition from walnut to laminated for some makers as well.

Great looking rifle, the stock is real nice, just enough dings to give it that used but not abused look!

I agree, with all that has been said, - nice honest rifle, and not an easy one to find this nice!

No problem on the BC, just if you ever disassemble it one day, jot down the code as early rifles are especially poorly represented in the database.

Good work on the pics too!
