I believe this to be an example of the S84/98 bayonets originally produced for export, possibly to Portugal. There are several variations of these export pieces some with flashguards and others without. Some are finished in the white and remain bright, others have a deep commercial reddish blue finish. These are very high quality pieces although the examples that were actually exported and later saw service can show heavy wear. Many of these pieces have a number (sometimes with a letter prefix) stamped laterally to the reverse pommel. A number of these bayonets have been located that for whatever reason were never exported and remain in excellent unissued condition.
Although there are no maker's marks or dates to the bayonet or scabbard this example was produced by E & F Hörster. The reverse pommel has two stick wing eagle WaA519 acceptance stampings. The same WaA519 stamping is located at the handle spine (almost completely hidden by the top edge of the flashguard) and to the top of the locking lug (only visible when pushed out). The scabbard has a single stick wing eagle WaA519 stamping to the reverse scabbard finial. Very nice high quality deep reddish blue commercial type finish to the entire piece. The wooden grips are stained and well finished as well. Produced for one of the foreign contracts and military accepted but then never exported or issued. Observations, information, and markings suggest this piece is from either late 1942 or early 1943 production.
