byf45 HT Without the Extra 135 Proof

Gunrunner

Senior Member
A friend of mine has a byf45 HT with matching optics that is in the 20K serial number range, it has been at the last two SOS shows and I know some of the members here looked at it, the sniper is undoubtedly original, my question is why does it not have the extra 135 proof by the serial number under the front mount, are there other known HT's like this one?

Chuck

Pictures added, stock is number and the locking lever is a replacement as the original was broken.

I looked at that one but didn't notice the missing proof. Not sure why it's missing, but perhaps that's why it hasn't sold.

Original?

I saw that rifle at SOS. How can you say it is an original Sniper for sure? I was not 100% sure. It would be great to see pictures of it here. Once I saw it was missing the proof I lost interest. Did it have a short/flat safety? Did it have a checkered butt plate? Was it serial numbered in the barrel trough? These are all questions that need to be ask, since I can not remember for sure. There are way to many fake/repro snipers.

Was that HT ever discussed here and were there Pics ?. I believe I remember it being discussed here but I maybe mistaken . I don`t remember seeing it at SOS . Can You Post some detailed Pics ?. The 135 Proof that is missing is the Final Acceptance Proof applied to a Sniper Rifle saying it passed all quality checks and ready to be shipped . One guess is as good as another as to why its missing . We will never know . Best Regards .

PS IMHO opinion Mike hit it head on why it did not sell the missing Proof sums it up .

Dave, this is the rifle you and I sat down and discussed at the SOS. It looked legit, except for the missing proof and we both thought that it was likely legit. We both agreed the price was high but your value guess was higher than mine. Archie's nice friend had it near the back wall.

From the Pics it looks OK to me . I believe there are a couple possible scenarios why the Final Proof is missing . It may not have passed inspection and was liberated at Factory or Depot , may also just been overlooked as was mentioned by another .

One obvious thing Final Proof is missing. The one other issue I noticed thats not typical of Late War HT is the Stop Pin for Locking Lever . The one on this Rear Mount is similar to Early HT`s although it is missing the Slot . I posted 4 Pics the 1st Pic shows the Role Pin and what is typical for Late HT`s . The 2nd Pic is Early Type Stop Pin which is threaded and screwed into the middle part of the Mount , the rusty condition makes it a bit hard to make out . The 3rd & 4th Pics are of HT being discussed .

I added one pic of Rear Rings it is a clearer pic showing the early stop pin. It is pic below the 1st pic on left .

Chuck was this Rear Middle Part with Locking Lever and Stop Pin a Part that was missing and Replaced or is it the original piece ?.

Best Regards

Dave, The locking lever and nut were missing, I'm not sure on the stop pin, the new parts came from Austria.

CAD Scope

Hello, Does this scope have a cross hair reticle? Some in this serial range do. Thanks.

HT with no final revisited

Now that this rifle is in new hands we are able to get additional images of the inspector number and other critical points.
There is no question that this rifle is a correct late Oberndorf HT with all the required features save for the final small E/135
receiver acceptance stamp. For whatever reason, this rifle lacks that inspection. Even so, the lack of that stamp does not
take away from this rifles legitimacy.

I for one would have no issues with this HT being in my collection . As mentioned it has everything that it should with the exception of the Final 135 Inspection Proof . Very Nice HT indeed were ever it maybe !!!!! .

Did someone here buy it?

Does it have checkered pattern in wood under butt plate? Thanks for more pics.

1944 Hi Turret proof

Was looking at the conversation regards the lack of ,or placement of, the final acceptance sniper proof, had to show you one of mine. Five digit "K" block .

I don’t think that lack of a proof is a common occurrence. It would take a multitude of characteristics to prove one without the proof is real. I personally would rather see the proof on one I buy. If you go to sell then you have explaining to do on why your rifle is a real sniper, because the other 99.9 % have the proof. I am sure you are well aware of all the faked snipers being sold out there.

I agree, Brian. In this particular case, there are a multitude of other verifying factors and I for one would overlook the proof's absence and be proud to have it.

But yes, I am also very curious why this one made it into circulation without.

Great rifle to be sure.

Jeff

Maybe it wasn’t intended for military purchase or use. Several reasons it could lack waffenamt inspection. Great rifle.
