Here is an example of a variation of the carbine protector made from oilskin. This cover is 1942 dated, factory coded and proofed WaA663 for Jean Weipert, Fabrik feiner Reisartikel, Offenbach/Main, Hessen (jhz) : (Visierschutzkappe : 41-42). This same type of cover is discussed in BBotW on pg.327.

Green canvas example, hck 41 , WaA 14 (Georg Lerch, Berlin). I am cumulating all action covers into this thread. This thread covers all the known action covers in my known world. I've not seen any other variants than these. If you have one, post it up.

More accessories from me: A Heer action cover made in 1941. Found in a Norwegian home guard depot many years ago. The story says it was in a huge crate with a lot of others. Wonder where the rest is? Remember I paid 500 NOK (62 dollar) for it at that time. Well well, this was in the good ole days.

It was a tight fit but I managed to get it on an early rifle. A later laminate gun, the cover would not come close to closing.

While learning about these a bit ago, I saved some photos. These aren’t mine, I found them on Google and Waf forum. Shows use likely in Afrika by motorcyclists and motorized troops.

My best guess is they were for the Africa campaign, to keep sand out of the rifles moving parts.

I could see guys who survived and moved to other fronts using them to keep water/snow/ice off the action. Just spitballing

I’ll add my only one to the thread. Nothing special and it came out of Norway 30+ years ago.

The photo evidence says only Afrika, but a lot have come out of Norway, where a lot of stationary troops in a harsh winter environment were. You read stories of guns freezing solid in Russia.....you’d think a cover would be good.

Well, as HM noted, they probably were for snow too if they came out of Norway. Not many deserts there. I've just never seen one in a period pic not connected with the desert OR a motorcyclist. I think they were intended for the latter, but it was found they were needed for general use in North Afrika. Nice one Can.AR :happy0180:

Agreed. Maybe some day more photos will surface.
