Third Party Press

Tools,cleaning kits, screwdrivers ect.

Thank you very much for the infos. I have two G 88 manuals, but none gave closer infos about shape or construction of the tools. Maybe former or later something will show up. This thread became so interesting in this short time.

Hello,
from a 1901 dated booklet on the G98.
No photos/drawings in the 1903 dated manual on the K98.

Hello,
concerning the G98?/Dutch? cleaning kits ....
Have two slightly different boxes.
The thread on the brushes looks like anything, but not German.

Thanks for the great info. Did you ever try to screw the brushes on a Gewehr 98 cleaning rod?

The Netherland where neutral in WW.1 so no chance of captured cleaning kits or war booty. May be you are right, there are no cleaning kits in tin boxes.

Would it be possible to post the title page of the 1901 booklet about the Gewhr 98 tool ?

bnz RG34 takedown tool

Those butterfly pull through are darn rare, never seen one for sale, though a few collectors own one (not me unfortunately); in an old KCN article (1993 by Hank Wichmann) he describes the pull through variations, and this one is the earliest in his outline.

His butterfly pull through was found in a "KH/1935" can, and the butterfly pull through marked "G.Appel 1935"

On a side note, Hank also mentioned the possibility of Steyr's facility at Graz making cleaning accessories (a tool marked e/815 & bnz/2 shield), though MarkW later query him on the possibility of a MG connection regarding the tools. Normally, I would discount the Steyr Graz observation and attribute Mark's comments as the most likely. However BerndN, another very resourceful German collector, in his MRJ article on the RG34, also mentioned seeing a can marked "kur" and their waffenamt e/815.

Very possibly a MG cleaning kit connection, but as I have seen pictures of your collection, I just have to ask, have you any thoughts on the Steyr Graz (kur) RG34?

Hello,
I can confirm I have a tool marked e/815 & bnz/2 shield . If request I can post a picture.

It exist some description of the cleaning tools from the K98 (K98a) but I don't think with pictures.
I must have a look for more of it.

Until then you can download “Schießdienst K98”. It’s an 8MB PDF.
On page 287 C. Reinigung

In D.V.E. 278 from 10. Oktober 1912 you can see there the cleaning supplies should be order.

Not to change the subject, but how about some pictures of the period showing cleaning of rifles- I came across some pics I thought pretty darn neat of wartime cleaning of the Gew.88. First set are Bavarians- some stocky rough looking types! (Munich March 31, 1916)

Another group, think 1916, but hard to read the scribble on back... a little less formidable group but an interesting group!

Hi,
The paint seems to be dark blue grey and looks original.

Best regards,
Antoni

Not the paint but the ground level. "Weißblech" is plane here you see a lot of moon crater and the painting looks so new.

Hi,

Best regards,
Antoni.

Yes I know them and I think after a lot of years the surface shows the use. Look also at the book “Kriegsmodell” page 358.

PC070002.JPG

But it is not really important.

Until now Ive thought the tin was a G98 one. Ive saw some in french museums together with german equipment.

Another cleaning kit that was offered as imperial German Gewehr 98 cleaning kit. :googlie
I do not know what country it originates from, but it sure is not German.
Similar to the Dutch cleaning kit shown in post#3, with oil bottle and cleaning cord, no brushes
Judging from the length of the cord it was made for a short rifle.
total length: 70cm = 27.55
