The seller stated he looked it up and it was worth $8,000. I offered a CMP Garand M1D and some cash for it. No go. In the end I paid well under the original asking price but definitely in the retail range. My problem is that I was not willing to walk away from it and that definitely puts a stink on one in a negotiation.

That thing is ridiculous :hail: Had you walked away you would kick yourself in the arse for the rest of your life over it. Well done. Pic stickied for ref.

Absolutely stunning. What a fine workmanship! Why oh why did Bubba have to hold down the barrel band spring with channel lock pliers and eff up the fore end?

It would be interesting to know where that rifle was during the war. Clearly not being carried around Europe.

I am assuming it sat in a rack in a German post office or some type of German postal facility. Unlikely it would have survived the war without some type of circumstances like that. 1930's dated 98k's in matching 95%+ condition are very hard to find regardless of whether G or K dated or something else.

The fact that it survived 60 years in the US postwar without being sporterized or damaged by neglect is nearly as remarkable. The shop that found this was a deerslayer gunsmith. They have an FFL for business but likely don't sell many rifles. I noticed a non-import type dot 1943 action sitting on the counter with a sporter barrel when I was there. I saved myself the heartache and didn't check to see if the bolt was matching but strongly suspect it was. Regardless, bless them for realizing this one was special and seeking out a buyer.

Well, we have all been in this position.. Killer item never to be seen again and the seller has you over a barrel..

The internet is a double edge sword as it only takes moments to find ended auctions or sold items on a dealer site. IE pre98.com

I guess in the end the one thing that matters is you now own it.. And what ever you spent its was the best money you spent in some time..

If that gives you any comfort..

Yes, you can make more money.

Yes you can make more money but its more overtime for me lol. Truly a stunning piece and such a fine piece of craftsmanship:hail:. The early rifles are such a work of art. The attention to detail they did with their work makes high custom guns today look like nothing in my opinion.

Look at the metal on that rifle!! Wow. Nice pick up Eric.

I doubt you can buy that quality these days, at any price.
