After almost a year waiting for ATF to approve, it got here today. I really like it because its matching, has a low serial number that puts production in 1918 during the war, and no "1920" stamp that makes me believe someone hid this at home until the 30's when the Germans repudiated the Treaty of Versailles. Theory behind its development was that elite soldiers would follow up a concentrated gas and smoke barrage with an immediate attack on a small portion of the trench front, armed with these, "light" 08/15's in the carry mode, and tons of grenades. Supposedly this firestorm would drive the Allies from their line and once the hole was made, the attack would be followed up with a reinforced assault from regular troops. In practice, the assault portion mostly worked, but the Germans never had enough available manpower to follow up effectively and most breaches were resealed.
