This is a simple project designed to record known Gew.91 production. The criteria needed is as follows (I will edit this as it progresses):

G=Specimens remarked Gew 91 converted from Kar 88s ("ghost-marked" K88)
K88=Kar 88s (so-marked) but configured as G91s (and matching)
G88=Specimens converted from G88 (so-marked) configured as G91s (and matching)
Keep eye out for specimens of any version with hook deleted and replaced by a bayo stud (supposedly they exist)

Key to markings:

NC= Unit Nose Cap
nm= "nm" under Gew.91
SB= Unit Sling band
S= S top receiver
Z= Z top receiver
*=obscured-unknown

Are you talking about the Badische Gendarmerie Karabiner M88? They have a bayonet stud like the Gewehr88, but are marked Kar88 on the bolt case.

Also used by Zoll (customs); in two versions; one with butt trap and one without. Referred to above are reported versions of G91s with hook removed and an M98-type bayonet stud only mounted on the hook mounting plate. I've never been too sure the reports are accurate...

No, never seen a Gew.91 altered with a bayonet stud... or heard about such rifle.

I have a question. How one could tell original Gew 91 butmarked as Kar 88 from Kar 88 sitting in Gew 91 stock?

I think he means "but marked"

To answer his question, the stock would not match the metal unless it was a factory or depot conversion.

Yes, I wanted to say "but marked", sorry for confusion.
How do mean "stock would not match metal.."? Could you please elaborate? I thought the only difference between Kar 88 stock and Gew 91 stock is stacking hook. And stacking hook does not have serial number, so technically one can switch stocks. Or am I wrong?
The reason I'm asking is because along with proper Gew 91 (that is on the list in OP) I also have another carbine in Gew 91 configuration, however it is marked as Kar 88. So how do I tell if it's Kar 88 in Gew 91 stock or proper Gew 91 that was not marked as such?

Stocks are numbered in the barrel channel. Take the stock off and see if the SN in the channel matches the SN on the receiver.

I have a Kar 88 (so-marked) stocked up as a G91; numbers match. The only unit marking is for a cavalry unit; G91s went primarily to field artillery. I can come up with theories but they are just that.

Thank you. I'll be back home in a week and will check the stock in the barrel channel.

So I took her apart and both wood in barrel channel and inside surface of stacking hook plate have same serial number as rifle. I guess it makes it another "Kar.88" marked Gew.91

So you can add to the list:
Erfurt 1893, serial 3523g, S with dot marked, "Kar.88. nm" marked, nosecap has "B.1.T.E.3.28."

Another Gew.91 emerged around here :

Erfurt 1891, serial #3974 (no letter), no regimental marking, not ghost marked, S modified.
