German Modified VZ24

Another recent purchase from the local fun show, a crudely modified Czech rifle with an ep'd bolt, a numbered floor plate, and side sling swivels removed...The rifle was supposedly sent back from the African Theater as there was a pith helmet also..The stock was sanded, but I am not sure if it was from the rework? The firing pin was numbered by stamping in the same font as the 2 digit number on the floorplate...There are no depot markings visible on the stock and the bands don't have any numbering that I can see..Here are some pics..Thanks for looking, Mike

Interesting example. Is the stock numbered (or mismatched) to the rifle anywhere? Bottom of the stock or in the barrel channel? Any German markings on the barrel below the wood line? Was that the original stock to the action? I can't tell whether a mismatched number was removed from the left of the buttstock, or simply the original Czech numbering. The period German acid-etching is interesting to me.

I couldn't get the rear trigger guard screw out, kroiled the snot out it, maybe tomorrow...There is a trace of a number in which the 0 and the P match but everything else is obliterated, and no numbering on the keel..

Congrats Mike, neat rifle. Like Pisgah, I also like that etching of the bolt components. There is some of the same kind of etching on the depot marked M1924 I bought from you.

Best,
Pat

..it was nice to see that my rifle isn't a one off...It's too bad this facility didn't mark their work...

Well I would certainly agree. The original rifle and the features are just too similar. The seemingly random choice of stamp vs acid-etch is quite interesting. I wonder what determined which method they used?

One of my German modded/numbered Yugoslav M1924's has very extensive acid etching/e-penciling, including lots of small parts. The only stamped component on it that isn't original Yugoslavian marked is the bolt arm, which is in a larger font. I would guess that acid etching might be more appropriate for small surface areas or in cases in which the armorer/facility lacked very small font stamps. Maybe someday someone will find the appropriate document that details how this was to be done, and under what circumstances.
