Thanks David, I added your rifles data, - sorry , but i do not have any period pictures of the 71/84. However, many here probably do; my interests are primarily 1888-1945, though Craig had inspired interest in these before his passing. Hopefully others can post some photographs from the 19th Century showing a G71 or G71/84 in the hand of soldiers.

The Storz book has a number of great era photos of both the 71 and the 71/84 in the hands of troops. About 385 large format pages. I suspect it would be easy to find the German edition in Europe.

His books on the Gew88 and Gew98 are also superb.

Thanks David, I will add this to the appropriate post ASAP, - thanks for the report, I haven't found a new rifle to record in sometime.

Hallo,

all matching Mod 71/84, AMBERG 1887 , date of issuse 1888.

s.n. 70953

unit stamps: B.17.R.E.3.155.

Mauser 71 thank you very much, I will try to get the book. It looks very interesting.

Just can not understand one thing. I do not know how is it in the US, but in Europe is possible these beautiful, matching, 130 years old rifles, easier to find than the much younger and in their millions series produced by K98, which after the war scattered throughout Europe. I do not get it.......

Of course, I mean the original matching K98 and not russian RC

71/84 list addition

Hello all...I just purchased a 71/84 you can add to the list if you please....Danzig 1887, s/n 7372r, unit marked 7.R.4.242 some time soon Ill post some pics of the few imperial mausers I have but Im still looking for an unmolested commission 88 to round out my collection if anyone has one available......

Thanks! I added it, - a really nice G88 can be tough, though they are out there. Lately the appreciation people in search of them have shown has made them more expensive than in the past. What was once a rather scarce rifle that could be had cheap is far less so today.

Here is my recent Kar71 to add to the list.

1888 Spandau 4735 (K. Mod.71) unit: G.K.3.21 (buttplate rear)

B.Mod.71

Here is my B.Mod.71

Manufactured by Steyr.

R/H has 1875 struck twice

Serial number 5851 E

Bolt is mis-matched.

Very faint unit markings, possibly: 7.A.F4.e

Externally the stock doesn't display usual acceptance marks to right hand side of butt stock (small mark to wrist). They were not removed, and the stock is an original Imperial German stock numbered to the rifle (barrel channel).

Possibly armoury replacement, please see attached images for details of markings discovered under butt plate.

Rifle was bought last year from the Congo, where it had remained for generations

Sounds like a fascinating story in itself, how did you manage to acquire it? Get it to the UK? Looks pretty good all things considered, the family must have taken very good care of the rifle.

I bought this at a pawn shop on 3/31/17 for $190. Spandau 1887 #1995, all matching, 11.05 bore, unit marking K.F.R.R.84.

Spandau K.Mod.71

Hi,
Here are the details of my K.Mod.71:
MAKER: Spandau
DATE OF MANUFACTURE: 1878
DATE OF ISSUE: N/A
SERIAL NUMBER: 5219 (all matching except bolt stop washer)
CALIBER: 11
UNIT STAMP: N/A
RMKS:
C/FW
Ladder rear sight missing (still searching)
Ring front sling swivel
Safety wing shows crude "F" (Feuer) in firing position and "S" in (Sicher) in safe position. Is it known where this inscription was used?

Question: I have tried to search for the meaning of the five crowned inspector markings, with no luck. I understand they are inspection markings that represent different stages of production. What production stages are they?

Regards,
Hans
