ham,

his has the very scarce JWH made flooplate seen mostly on DUV rifles.

later
vaughn

;) I thought those were just scratches or dings. Going back and looking at it, I see it now, which is better depicted in WaA's post. Sorry for missing it. That is a difficult variant subcontracted part to find!

Yeah, I didn't have a better pic. These show up in this range which is why I asked if your rifle had it.

DUV markings

Hello,
I have recently aquired a DUV, cannot find any markings on it except for the Waffenampts on receiver top/side, barrel and all numbers matching. Is there a lack of markings on DUV? Also, the sporterized stock has matching numbers in channel. Lack of pictures, but all numbers match on it, without waffenampts.

duv/42 (actually all BLM's) are some of the most consistent 98k made, characteristics are remarkably progressive and consistent, with few deviations within ranges. As changes occur, these characteristic are pretty much set.

What your rifle should have depends on the suffix of your rifle, but your barrel appears to be an FN barrel, which is usually not a characteristic before the f-block of 1942. By far most are known in the f-block also, but a few linger on after. Assuming your rifle is an f-block, or after, it should have very few markings.

Thank you for quick reply. It is i block. This is another strange marking I don't know much about. Overall though it has very few markings. I have original stock but it is cut down:( Numbers match too. It was a flat butt plate. Only other thing they did to it was grind off the front of the rear sight that retains the upper hand guard, but I am trying to locate a donor to braze on. Overall it is a great piece with an excellent bore. Bolt has eagle on underside of handle. Butt plate had BRP, but they thinned it by grinding. Mostly I am keeping the old stock to show that it was numbers matching.

Ah, yes I have this rifle recorded already. A GB sale last month... I had thought it possible it was a "k" block from the picture posted, but now i see this is the same rifle from February. The marking you show is a blank maker, which means it is the steel provider FN used to make the barrel. It is an unknown trademark, but probably a Belgian or French steel source. FN used a wide mix of blank suppliers, I am fairly familiar with German steel mills and the German steel industry, but the Belgian and French much less so. The German and English steel industry is fairly well written about, the French and Belgian less so, though Cockerill of Belgium (near Liege) is fairly well known (not surprisingly they used a rooster for a trademark, what FN used to identify the firm could, and probably was, different).

Anyway, the marking is unknown as to who it identifies, though to purpose, it identifies the steel supplier (maker of the steel blank that FN turned into a rifle barrel)

BTW, while the buttplate looks flat, it was actually a modified cupped buttplate. You can tell this because, well for one BLM was using CBP exclusively by this point, since 1941 actually, but also because the buttplate is bpr marked, which is Grossfuss, and they made cupped buttplates, not flat ones. The butcher that sportered the rifle also ground down the edges.

Anyway, you do not have to believe this, but it is a fact.

Actually makes sense now that i look at it it appears to be cut down like you said. Such a shame. Further investigation leads me to ponder that this is a duffle cut bring back. I just wish they would have left it alone, but then again I wouldn't have gotten a good deal. So, now i have to look for a stock.. It is neat though with all numbers matching.
