I buy capture paper guns
Staff member
Was waiting on an oil change and walked into gander mountain. This happened to be there. I kinda felt bad for it, so I bought it. It has some minor issues, but the bore is strong.

Maybe it will become my shooter, I think they thought it was one of the m48s that they had there. I did not want it to get chopped up.

It is duffle cut, no import mark.

What was the barrel code? In this range Brno has quite a mix, from AZ to EC and beyond.. they must have used a lot of older barrels in this range, before they went to "aa"; it seems E* is the proper range, but prior to double suffix they have a lot of early barrels.

Does the stock have the full serial (202 x) with suffix? It should, but I can't tell. Curious because it is known some makers that did routinely use the full serial, w/suffix, occasionally do not have them. Not the case with Brno in this general range, they all have suffix, but I can't make one out in your pictures. Looks good, so I am sure it is right, just the details would be useful.

Glad you saved it, dot/44 might be one of the most common makers in 1944, but they held their quality far beyond most. And under very difficult circumstance...

Its a BC barrel code. Stock has a squiggly line after the serial number. I think it is in fact a Z, just poorly struck.

This is my second DOT 44. Like I said, I felt bad for it sitting there. Every matching 98k needs a good home!

Bolt matches? Made in early 44. They started at the w block in 44.

Whoops I was wondering why I was getting asked that. Forgot a photo!

Thanks for the info.

I have seen a few good rifles turn up at Gander Mountain a few times. Most of time they do not know what they have. Luckily you got yourself a nice DOT 44 rifle ugafx4! And I don't collect the Dot codes much but if I saw one sitting in the same store I buy it too. Your right every K98k thats all matching needs a good home.

Yea bob, that's why I took a photo of that. Like I said, minor issues but cool none the less.

Thanks uga, - a small matter, because Mike is right, this is an early rifle, but according to my trends, the rollover was in the v-block. dot/43 ends with 5260 v and dot/44 starts with 7657 v, no overlap so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a little overlap, both in serials and that some dot/43's were "probably" finished in early 1944. Detailed examinations would be needed to confirm rifles on the cusp (if they could be differentiated), but generally mid-v block seems the transition point.

Of course I am wrong, the 44's show up in the V block. Shouldn't rely on my memory.

Just wait till you are my age. I could once remember almost every serial number on my M1911s, about 50 of them. Now I am lucky to remember my lunch. You remain almost perfect IMO.

As a collector Mike has few peers, because he is not only blessed with knowledge, but also with generosity, kindness and open-mindedness which are all things needed to be a good author. Being knowledgeable, or having a good memory, isn't enough. To be a successful author/researcher you need to have cooperation of others, to make people want to help you in your projects.

Mike has these traits, proven many times, I do not think I have seen him loose his patience or temper with anyone.

I think that is one of Mike's strongest traits, his open-mindedness, his willingness to look objectively at subjects or rifles, not get caught up in being correct in every tedious detail - knowledge can be a liability alone, it can make you ignore others opinions, have contempt for contrary views, which in the more than 10 years I have known Mike, he has never suffered from.

Anyway, Mike is a leader, he marshals specialists around him and makes them a team where something can be accomplished. Not too many of those around these days.

Paul, that's probably the nicest thing anyone, other than my mother, has ever said about me. Coming from someone who is so knowledgeable and sharing himself I take it as the greatest compliment. Now, I command that you outlive me so that you can speak at my funeral. [emoji23]

I think it is an obvious fact, not because we have been friends for a number of years, - I have known many longer (and like them) and can't say the same about them, or myself, as I am very intolerant of others, especially if i think little of them.

It is easy to see characteristics in others that you lack, especially when they are so stark, but I think that knowledge is over rated in the grand scheme of things. There are many extremely knowledgeable specialists on this forum, even a few on other forums, but how many can unite them in a project that you and Bruce have undertaken? I can't think of even one other collector.

As big a snob as I surely am, I can see well enough that Mike, and Mike alone, is the leader in this narrow little hobby of ours. And it is because you are a person that can (and does) bring it altogether...

Quick question, was stock acceptance sporadic in this range? Does not appear to have an eagle H.
