Matching BYF41 in walnut

militarytorch

Senior Member
I got this rifle last week.
I couldn't resist the markings on the stock and as a result I probably ended up paying way more than I should have.

Now for the good, and the bad and not sure about.

Good:
Untouched Walnut stock
Matching down to cleaning rod and the screws.
Very nice bore
Lots of WaAs and there is even one on the handguard.

Bad:
I took the repo sight hood and discovered some solder on the front sight. (Could that have come that way from the factory?)
Letter L is carved in on the left side of the stock.

Not so sure about:
The carved in name is a distraction but I was able to find the vet who brought it back.

http://www.bakersfield.com/obituaries/2015/08/19/fearmon-ld-sowell.html

From the obituary "...LD served in the Army during World War II and fought in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge..."

I am curious how much the carvings hurt the rifle but mainly I am wondering about the front sight.

All of your comments are very welcome.

Thank you,
Steve

Beautiful byf41!

Someone has messed with the front sight blade to make it more visible I guess.

Indeed a matching byf41 code with a matching cleaning rod is hard too find in this condition. Walnut stock is even better. The craved named does affect the value too some collectors that want 100% mint, mint condition pieces. But I love it. Plus you have the history too go with this rifle that ties it with the vet. The front sight yes another affect in value but not a big deal too me. Nice rifle.

That is one gorgeous 98k ! I just love walnut stocks with the deep cartouches.
Tks for posting and the pics,

That's a beauty! Pic stickied for ref. Frankly, I'm not put off by the vet personalization. I prefer that to him "personalizing" it with a duffle cut ;) Congrats :happy0180:

Thank you very much for your comments.
All I need to find is an original hood that would match the finish (I have 3 but they don't look "right")

Great looking Rifle . Those crispy Proofs are one of the reason I like the Walnut Stock rifles so much.

Hey I just discovered your post,
I know a rifle (also byf 41 V block with walnut stock, Luftwaffe issued) which looks a lot similar to this one, except the font of numbers is different, yours look more "sharp" than the one I know. He was found in the Battle of the Bulge area either. I'll share some pictures later

Awesome find, Looks like a brass bead was added to sight most likely by the Vet that bought it home. The sight blade can be replaced if you wanted to.
