Nice gun bruce! Thanks for posting pictures! Oddly enough I too also picked up a jhv44 today. Found it on the used rack at a local shop. Its a m block all matching, missing the hood and rod but the unsanded stock was varnished. I get to pick it up on the 2nd

Wow

Bruce that is a real beauty, your right it was worth the drive. and this looks like your lucky rifle with 7 and 11 for serial numbers.
Her are some pics of a close cousin I own in the "m" block :

Jhv44

Yours and the rifle in the sticky section owned by Ham are super, likely a notch up on condition. These late 98/40s in laminate have always had that 'cool factor' in my book.

The internet makes the collecting world smaller, and at one time these laminate 98/40s were very scarce indeed in my local area and still are.

Bruce, I got this jhv 44 probably in the late 80s when a 98/40 was a 98/40. Traded Lynn Lugar a late Jap. T.94 canvas holster rig for it (worth about $400 at that time).

B block happened during jhv 41. G.98/40 serial numbers continued where the previous years production ended. This makes it a bit easier to figure out their suffix letters (Bruce's rifle is L block).

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I have only L and M blocks in my limited 44 database.

Love the rifles guys!

Are Bruce's and Ham's rifles letter suffix "L" or are they "B?"

something I always mix up.

I have an M blovk 44

Pisgah and you are right, it's "L" I think. I always get that wrong in spite of being corrected. It sure looks like a b ;)

Trust me, I do as well. Pisgah's rule of matching year/code/alpha had me changing all kinds of stuff in the meager database a couple of years ago.......:happy0180:

So is anybody keeping a database of the high and low serials for the 44 dated 98/40s? I'm really curious to know the two extremes.

Possibly a G98/40 41-42-43-44 serial number sticky?

I'd defer to Simson or vaughn but the highest I have for 44 is 3166 'm'

Vaughn has a G98/40 serial number study posted over on DD's site. The latest jhv 43 in his study is 3632L and the earliest noted jhv 44 is 4878L. 3371940's latest of 3166m is the latest I see recorded anywhere. Off of the top of my head I think I may have seen one or two later, but if so, nothing later than 4-5000 range of the M block.

Bruce that is a fine looking rifle, let me know if you ever wanna get rid of it.

I bet that 3166m is worth a fortune.

That one had butchered lumber. I didn't log the final auction price but not valuable considering the alterations. Any matching, unaltered, laminated 98/40 would command a premium.

I was being semi sarcastic as I bought it to go with the 3160m i already had.
