Imperial Muzzle cover finish question...

I picked this up at the local flea market this morning...When I bought it, I thought it looked like the finish had been messed with, but the price was right...So when I finally could look at it under a magnifying glass, turns out it is a painted gray finish with a good portion remaining...I photographed all markings present...Were they painted from the factory also? I always thought they were finished in the white or nickel plated...Thanks for looking..Mike

I believe the later made ones were coated with a zinc finish from the factories. Some of the early ones I've ran across meaning pre world war one do have a nickel coating on them.

Except for one finished in nickel for parade use, all of my original 98G muzzle covers have been in the white with blue springs.

Later muzzle covers were painted feldgrau. You have an example of this type. Do not remove the paint.

Thanks for the information, I was familiar with feldgrau painted bayonets/scabbards (ersatz) and I definitely did not plan to remove the finish on the cover due to the fact it could have been field applied...I didn't realize it was a factory finish..Thanks again, Mike
