New Member and New To Me Mauser Rifle ID Help

Hello, I am a new member to the forum looking for any help on identifying this rifle. I hope this is the correct subgroup.

My father has had this rifle since the early 1960s but does not know anything about it other than it is chambered in 8mm. He recently gave it to me and I would like to know more about it, including confirming if it is an original commercial factory sport Mauser.

The pictures may be hard to see, but it has a set trigger, claw type scope mounts, 1000 meter rear sight, mag bottom has the button press with bullet type release, rifle sling attachments, only proofs appear to be crowns over U and B, the number 7806 on the left side below the front scope mount, number 06 on the bolt release switch, on the bolt handle (with the same 2 proof marks again), on the thumb safety switch and on the rear of the bolt - and possibly other places I have not looked for yet. Has Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf a/n also on the left side of the barrel.

Happy to provide any other necessary info. Any assistance with any info on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I was able to attach smaller pictures to post more of them, at the cost of reduced resolution.

I also have pictures of the stock and bolt, but can't figure out how to post as the other pictures apparently used all my attachment space.

Hard to say what you have with these pictures; try and do better ones? Commercial rifles are not my thing at all, same with foreign contracts, - what I do know I lifted off of Jon Speed and his books...

Regarding pictures, you must post 3 times to get the restrictions lifted, - a spammer defense tool - once you post three or more times I believe most restrictions will end and that includes pictures. You also might consider using Gunboards-Mauser forum, they have some knowledgeable guys there, including Jon Speed who lurks, and I do not think he does so here as much. Commercial rifles are his thing, anything to do with Mauser, if you do good pictures I will ask him to review your post and pictures for any suggestions. But until you do I can't waste his time with these pictures...

At anyrate, welcome to the forum!

It sure looks like a real beauty. Not sure if pre-war or post but those triggers are a nice touch. Am sure it has some real value. Hope to hear more.

New pictures. Hope these help but let me know if other pictures might help more. Thanks!

Jon Speed comments

I asked Jon Speed for his opinion:

As for the guys Mauser Sporter on the site, its a 1904 period similar in style to post war Model B. The scope mounts are NOT factory done but by German Gunsmith in any period. Nothing special I see on this rifle.

Many thanks for your help and for the other comments. At least I know the year now (older than I expected). Even if it is “nothing special” to Jon, it was a nice gift and I think it is pretty neat.

I can't speak to Jon's exact meaning, though my impression is he meant that is was nothing unusual, - not that it wasn't desirable, valuable or interesting.
