Mod. Mauser 1896 salesman's rifle

So here is my Mod. Mauser 1896 salesman's rifle. Made in 1896 by Lugwig Loewe & Berlin. All matching with the serial number of six. I know most of these rifles were ordered by the Orange Free State and saw service in the Boer War. My rifle has no O.V.S. marks on it. Their commercial proof marks on the receiver and Bolt into type of Cartouche marks on the stock and front barrel band. This rifle was formerly part of the well known Bruce Stern collection and also part of Ohio Ordnance Works owner Robert Landies collection. I had the privilege to talk to Robert on the phone a couple months ago.

What an extraordinary rifle! These "fabrikzeichen" (trademark) rifles are pretty desirable, I have always wanted to pick one of these up, but they can get pricey... especially in nice (original-match) condition.

Of course yours is much more than your typical trademark LL M96, this rifle is comparable to the G88's Loewe made for commercial sales, though I have only seen one, the 1891 ScottB owns, and I believe he picked up from Denny Gaither (GRHS). I would post pictures i have of it, but I can't on the forum. I believed I used it in my article on Ludwig Loewe, for those that have it...

Anyway, that is some rifle, with a fine pedigree!

Thank you Loewe. I got this rifle back in January. I won it off of GunBroker. Ohio Ordnance Works description about the rifle wasn't the greatest. When I finally got to talk to Robert Landies. He told me all about it.

Bob is quite interesting to talk to, and typically it will last for hours, whether you want it to or not

I would personally replace the Argentine 1891 band with an unmarked band.

The N crown stamp was used after 1911/1912- so what happened to this rifle between 1896 and 1911/12?
Are more proof house stamps on the barrel underside?
