Need opinions on byf45 Full Kriegsmodell

I bought the gun today at a gunshow from a guy I've dealt with before. The gun looked right as rain so I bought it. It wasn't until I got it home that it occurred to me the bolt root wasn't stamped with the letter suffix. The gun is serial number 6657a. Then my attention was drawn to what looks like welding pits around the bolt serial number. Looking at it with a jeweler's loupe it looks like the original serial number was ground off, filled with weld then restamped. That caused me to look at the shroud and it looks like the same work was done to it.

The bolt looks right and it is marked with the intertwined WR.

I believe you have correctly ascertained what has been done, they ground off the numbers on the bolt root and the shroud, welded them up and restamped them. Very likely it was a bolt mismatch, and they decided to try to boost the value. Ruined a perfectly good bolt, this would be a great gun with just a mismatched bolt! How is the rest of the gun?

Looks like a “pinged” WaA37 on the extractor collar but that bolt body looks fantastic, I love the machining marks around its circumference.

The rest of the gun is right on the money using the Kriegsmodell book. The stock is a properly marked walnut stock and it came with a very good condition sling. I paid $1100 for the gun.

My wife is the skeptic of the family. She said if I bought a matching Kriegsmodell for such a good price there has to be something wrong with it.

More than you know...

I guess the question now is; do I keep it as a bolt mismatch or try to return it because it's not what I was buying?

For $1100 probably not IMO....Remember that you’ll have a bolt mm but you’ve also lost the value of a matching itself bolt. Let’s see some pics of it

I agree, let’s see the rest of it. If it were me and I kept it, I would definitely get a non-humped bolt for it to make it a legit bolt mismatch rifle.

You mentioned you purchased from him before; he should do right by you and refund your money. If you do plan to keep it, realize you spent 1100 for a rifle without a bolt. As others have pointed out, the a$$hole who did this took an honest mismatched bolt and hacked the root on the bolt body ruining its value.

It's been like that since at least 2003 based on some old auction pics I have saved.

Here's the saved photo, I don't have any other info myself, maybe someone else has more.
